Helping a friend run his farm.  His G7000 laptop was as slow as I will be in 45 years (I will be 90 for what it is worth).

Anyway...

Factory reset of Vista - My Docs fine

Degragmented hard drive - My Docs fine

Installed AVG antivirus et al (skype, open office... and dropbox which will NOT install from site, advice for that along the way would be appreciated).

Upgraded RAM chip to 2GB in one slot and 512 in the other  - NOTHING VISABLE IN MY DOCS BUT RECYCLE BIN HUGE (with only two files about 9kb a piece!)... and no I have not sent anything but the two files to the recycle bin.

Any ideas appreciated!

Remove the ram you added and leave only what was originally there, see what that does.

Check to make sure the video card (if there is one) is fully seated. Maybe you bumped it while working on the ram.

Check Device Manager, see if there are any yellow marks, especially for Video.
