You can then perform these steps on the machine while you await my suggestions for what to do with the logs.....

 

First thing we will do is download and install Unchecky. This software will prevent unwanted items, being installed by you unknowingly.

Go ahead and install Ccleaner. Now that you have the program installed go ahead and run the cleaner function.

Now that you have cleaned out some temp files, lets go ahead and disable all of the items starting up with your machine except your antivirus. To do this you will need to click on tools then start up select each item then disable.

Now that you have disabled those un-needed start ups lets go into the settings, we will have Ccleaner run when your machine boots, so that you will never have to worry about cleaning temp files again.

To do this:

  • Hit options.
  • Settings.
  • Place a tick to run Ccleaner when the computer starts.

Now go to the advanced tab, and select close program after cleaning, now run the cleaner again this will close Ccleaner.

 

  • Hit the Start button then.
  • Right Click My computer
  • Properties
  • Harwdare Tab
  • Device Manager.
  • Scroll down to the IDE ATA/ATAPI Controlers Left click the + to the left of the drivers.
  • Right Click and uninstall all of your Primary IDE drivers.
  • There most likely will be more than one of the Primary IDE Drivers!!
  • Make sure and un-install All of them prior to rebooting.
  • Make sure that you only remove the Primary IDE Drivers nothing else
  • Reboot the machine.
  • Another request will be made to reboot after the initial.
  • Reboot again.

Reboot your machine after.

 

Install 360 total Security  http://www.360totalsecurity.com/en/

Now run the initial scan, this will tell you what items are not needed to startup at a system level. Also go to  Tool Box then go to Patch this will make sure that you have the latest security patches from Microsoft. You can then run a full virus scan, you may uninstall this and reinstall avast if you wish, this was just to get you patched up and also disable unneeded items on the machine this is the easiest method I know of.

 

Although 360 is a bit lighter than Avast you may wish to keep it, another antivirus option to consider is SecureAplus which I am currently running.

Open Autoruns and under the "Task Scheduler"    tab uncheck these.

Reboot your machine, once you have completed all instructions please let me know how things are running, I will then suggest a couple other things but this is enough for now. :)

Ok. Now I am lost. I copied/pasted below. I was moving right along until here.

 

Now that you have cleaned out some temp files, lets go ahead and disable all of the items starting up with your machine except your antivirus. To do this you will need to click on tools then start up select each item then disable.

Now that you have disabled those un-needed start ups lets go into the settings, we will have Ccleaner run when your machine boots, so that you will never have to worry about cleaning temp files again.

To do this:

  • Hit options.
  • Settings.
  • Place a tick to run Ccleaner when the computer starts.

Now go to the advanced tab, and select close program after cleaning, now run the cleaner again this will close Ccleaner.

 

  • Hit the Start button then.
  • Right Click My computer
  • Properties
  • Harwdare Tab
  • Device Manager.
  • Scroll down to the IDE ATA/ATAPI Controlers Left click the + to the left of the drivers.
  • Right Click and uninstall all of your Primary IDE drivers.
  • There most likely will be more than one of the Primary IDE Drivers!!
  • Make sure and un-install All of them prior to rebooting.
  • Make sure that you only remove the Primary IDE Drivers nothing else
  • Reboot the machine.
  • Another request will be made to reboot after the initial.
  • Reboot again.

I have no "settings" option under "tools" - ?

 

And the only start up I can see is below in the START menu

 

Place a tick -  ? You mean a check?

Before I go any further ...  dUninstalled reads IDLE and a popup below said it was done yet the AVAST Uninstaller is still on the desktop, although it is removed from dUninstaller.

 

The AVAST setup page came up so I guess it's done but the popup will not go away and it reads Uninstalling.

So, is it done?

 

So should I restart?

Yes go ahead and restart, if you have issue removing Avast then use this tool.
