Several times a day win 7 desktop freezes with a BSOD which includes a reference to atikmpag.sys. The details of the computer I have is shown the first attachment and the BSOD in the second attachment. I use Microsoft Essentials and do not believe its a virus, but I cannot be sure. Any help would be much appreciated.

I now know what confused me. When I added an attachment I was looking for a "Post" button but there was not one. It appears that when you have added an attachment and it appears in your reply you then are supposed to click on a button in a different location called "Add to reply" which effectively posts it. I hope this is clear.

Thank you Aura so much for your efforts. Hopefully you can appreciate I am wary of installing new software on my computer without first checking it out. The Catalyst Software Suite you mentioned looks to be from a reputable site but are you able to tell me why this should/may fix my problem? Would I be right in saying that I will have on my computer at the moment software which is supposed to perform the same function? If so why not just uninstall it and re-install? If I was to make a restore point and then install the Catalyst Software Suite would I be able to revert to my previous setup should the Catalyst Software Suite not work?

The WEI above was calculated several years ago so I have done  another which is attached, it shows a significant drop in "Disk Data transfer rate"  and small drops in the two "Graphic" components if this means anything to you. Sorry if I am a pain and I really appreciate the effort you are going too.

That reputable site like you said is the website of your graphic card manufacturer And the program you downloaded is the latest installer for your graphic card drivers, since you're running old and outdated ones. Since these drivers are causing your BSODs, I hope that installing the latest ones will stop these since they'll be stable.

Thanks Aura, In Control Panel - programs is listed "ATI Catalyst Install Manager" should I uninstall this first, or will downloading and installing as you suggest go over the top?

You don't need to uninstall it, the newer version will overwrite the old one with new drivers and programs.

Hi Aura, an update. 

To date I have run jv16 power tools to clean up my computer, it had not been done for years and then used the computer. After 4 days I got a BSOD which was much better than the previous 2 per day.

Next I ran the defragger  several times which took 22 hours. Computer seems faster especially at start up.

I will give it another week or until I get a BSOD before I update using the Catalyst Software Suite.

I only want to do one thing at a time to see the difference it makes. 

I will post again if I get a BSOD other wise you can assume all fixed.

Thanks for your help. I need to clean my computer up every now and again it would seem. As for the video drivers I would never of found them without your help because of the name change.

I have been away and only got around to installing the Catalyst Software Suite as you suggested last week.  I am now happy to let you know that it has solved the problem. I can only but thank you once again for a great job.
