I was performing one last scan of the system with AdWare, Spybot, etc. before making a restore point for XP.

I also was installing McFee Virus scan to use instead of Norton when the pc re-booted and now I am receiving the error message that "explorer.exe Application error.... failed to initialize properly (0xc0000005).

It will not boot in safe mode either. I am able to run programs by going through MSConfig and bringing up the program, hence I was able to get a HiJackThis log and export off of my external drive to this machine and thus post.

I thought for sure we had it. I was on the final stages of having a perfectly clean machine where I could make a restore point for XP, then BAM!!!!

Update- I was able to obtain a XP home disc from a friend, I was able to perform the "repair" function with success! I don't have a disc personally because XP came pre-loaded and if I chose to use the SONY Recovery disc, all data and added programs would have been lost:-(

In talking with this friend, he had heard of the exact same thing happening to someonme else when they were installing McAfee with Norton already on the machine, so I think it was something to do with those two programs fighitng each other.

I would still like to remove Norton completely aand use McAfee, but since there is no installer included with Norton I am afraid to perform this without causing damage. Any ideas? The System Mechanic 5 program that I have offers an uninstaller feature for any .exe program by searching all areas of Windows for associations, including the Registry, I am leaning towards trying this but again, I am not sure if this is the correct approach. There may be a better way that I am not aware of.

The machine is better than normal now thanks to the help from the forum and I really appreciate the help.

There's no entry for Norton in Add/Remove Programs? Norton is notoriously hard to remove, so much so that Symantec has released 'aftermarket' (for lack of a better term) applications that uninstall it. What version of Norton do you have?
