I use Microsoft Security Essentials on my home machines. Once we resolve your issue you are more than welcome to re-install Avast if you wish. I've found that it uses more resources than Microsoft Security Essentials and since you only have 2GB of RAM I thought it a good idea.

This is not going well.
I have uninstalled Avast, no problem. I also uninstalled Java since I don't use it anymore and I noticed you said there was something wrong with it, and I thought maybe it would clear some space and improve performance, you never know. No problem there either.
The problem came in with installing Microsoft Security Essentials. It does not want to install. I keep getting an error message. It tells me to reboot and try again. Which I did. And still no joy. I don't know what to do. I can't get this bloody thing installed!
And since I'm not doing the Clean Boot thing anymore we're back to same old slow laptop, sigh.

It's a process of elimination at this point so hang in there.

When you try to install it, what is the exact error you are getting? Is it the following?

I have 2 more questions for you.
1. My gf sort of installed BitTorrent. I say sort of, because somewhere during the process she decided maybe it wasn't such a good idea after all and quit the installation. Now BitTorrent shows up in my list of programs, but I can't find any files on it, and it doesn't work either. I have tried to uninstall it, but I get an error message which says that I am not authorised to uninstall, I need to contact my system administrator. How do I get rid of the pesky bugger?
2. The first, say 3 times, I connect to the internet, I have not even opened my browser but the data is running like it's on a marathon. At least 50MB and up to 100MB per time. After I connect like the 5th or 6th time for the day, the usage corresponds to what I am doing. Do you have any idea what this could be?
Oh, btw gf says laptop is faster now, maybe I'm just biased and frustrated
Thanks!

I'll help you remove this. Please do the following.
FRST Registry Search
1. Run FRST by Right-Clicking on the file and choosing Run as administrator.
2. Copy and paste the words BitTorrent into the Search box and click the Search Registry button.
3. When the scan is complete a notepad window will open with the results. Please copy and paste the contents in your next reply. If for some reason notepad doesn't open the file should be
saved on your desktop named Search.txt.

Very nifty tool that, it just goes right in and extracts whatever you want, doesn't it
Yes it does!! Great tool. Please do the following to clean that up and then I'll be back with you regarding your other issue.
FRST Fix
NOTICE: This script was written specifically for this user, for use on that particular machine. Running this on another machine may cause damage to your operating system
1. Download attached file and save it to the Desktop.
fixlist.txt 549bytes
133 downloads
Note. It's important that both files, FRST and fixlist.txt are in the same location or the fix will not work (in this case...the desktop).
2. Run FRST by Right-Clicking on the file and choosing Run as administrator.
3. Press the Fix button just once and wait. If for some reason the tool needs a restart, please make sure you let the system restart normally. After that let the tool complete its run.
4. When finished FRST will generate a log on the Desktop (Fixlog.txt). Please post the contents of it in your reply.

Also, when you have a moment please attach the following log file. Note the file name may not be exact but will begin with MSSecurityClient and end in Install.log. Thank you.
C:\ProgramData\Microsoft\Microsoft Security Client\Support\MSSecurityClient_Setup_4.8.204.0_epp_Install.log

It's a hidden folder. So click your Start button and paste the following into the Search box and hit enter.
C:\ProgramData\Microsoft\Microsoft Security Client\Support
You should then see the log.

OK, please do the following. Your machine will reboot. Then try installing Microsoft Security Essentials again. Let me know how it goes.

Great! OK, back to the issue at hand. Are you still having the slowness issues that you were experiencing when booted normally?
