2. Type services.msc into the search box and hit enter. Click Continue on the User Account Control prompt if it appears.

3. Scroll down in the list of services that appear until you find Windows Update.

4. Right-click on the Windows Update service and select Start.

This is your decision but with Windows Update being broke, no security updates will be installed and your machine will be vulnerable to infection so you will likely be back here for assistance. If you would like to try and resolve let me know. If you don't wish to please also let me know.

Let's give it a go. There are three different things I'd like to try.

 

Step#1 - System File Checker - Check for Corruption
1. Click your Start Orb in the lower left of your computer and type cmd in the search box.
2. Once the cmd program is found, right-click on it with your mouse and select Run as administrator as shown below.

3. Answer Yes when asked to allow.
4. You should now have a black window open that you can type in to.
5. Type sfc /scannow and hit enter to start the scan. Please notice the space between sfc and /scannow.
6. Once the scan finishes please copy and paste the following into the command prompt window and hit enter. You will need to right-click your mouse in the command-window and select paste.
  findstr /c:"[SR]" %windir%\logs\cbs\cbs.log >%userprofile%\Desktop\sfcdetails.txt
7. This will place a new file on your desktop named sfcdetails.txt. Please copy/past the contents of this file into your next post.

Excellent job. There's definitely corruption that we need to fix. We need one more scan before we can resolve.

 

Run System Update Readiness Tool

1. Please download and run the System Update Readiness Tool from here.

2. It may take 10 minutes or so to run. Let it complete.

3. When the SURT finishes running, zip up and attach the following log file. To zip up the file you can right-click on it and select Send to compressed (zipped) folder.

C:\Windows\Logs\CBS\CheckSUR.persist.log

Step#1 - SFCFix Script
Warning: this fix is specific to the user in this thread. No one else should follow these instructions as it may cause more harm than good. If you are after assistance, please start a thread of your own.

• Download SFCFix.exe (by niemiro) and save this to your Desktop.
• Download the attached file below, SFCFix.zip, and save this to your Desktop. Ensure that this file is named SFCFix.zip - do not rename it.
• Save any open documents and close all open windows.
• On your Desktop, you should see two files: SFCFix.exe and SFCFix.zip.
• Drag the file SFCFix.zip onto the file SFCFix.exe and release it.
• SFCFix will now process the script.
• Upon completion, a file should be created on your Desktop: SFCFix.txt.
• Copy (Ctrl+C) and Paste (Ctrl+V) the contents of this file into your next post for me to analyse please

i ran that and copied and pasted in the search box.  When it comes up a box opens for a second and disappears.  I went and searched through and found the CBS log and when I clicked it I got a box that said ACCESS DENIED

Correct. You can't open that log file like that. If you ran through the steps there should be a file on the desktop named sfcdetails.txt. I need you to open this file and post the contents. If you didn't run through the steps I'll put the instructions here for you again. Thanks.

 

Step#2 - System File Checker - Verify Corruption Fixed
1. Click your Start Orb in the lower left of your computer and type cmd in the search box.
2. Once the cmd program is found, right-click on it with your mouse and select Run as administrator as shown below.

3. Answer Yes when asked to allow.
4. You should now have a black window open that you can type in to.
5. Type sfc /scannow and hit enter to start the scan. Please notice the space between sfc and /scannow.
6. Once the scan finishes please copy and paste the following into the command prompt window and hit enter. You will need to right-click your mouse in the command-window and select paste.

Corruption appears to be fixed. Now let's check your disk for any other corruption and then we can resolve the Windows Update issue. Please do the following.
 
Step#1 - ChkDsk Scan
1. Click your Start Orb in the lower left of your computer and type cmd in the search box.
2. Once the cmd program is found, right-click on it with your mouse and select Run as administrator as shown below.

3. Answer Yes when asked to allow.
4. You should now have a black window open that you can type in to.
5. Please type chkdsk and then press enter.
6. Chkdsk will start to run. Please allow it to finish. You will know it is running when you see text as follows.

 
7. Download ListChkdskResult.exe by SleepyDude and save it on your desktop. If it's already downloaded to your desktop, just skip this step.
8. Right-click this file and select Run as administrator (Allow if prompted) and a text file will open (and also be saved on the desktop as ListChkdskResult.txt).
