Hello all!

 

I have an ASUS Zenbook UX303LN Laptop with Windows 8.1.

 

Until yesterday, when I plugged a monitor/projector into my laptop using HDMI, the sound worked perfectly and came out of the monitor. However starting yesterday, whenever I plug my monitor into my laptop, the sound gets muted, and Windows will not let me unmute. If I change playback device to my computer speakers, everything works fine. But if I use the HDMI audio, it suddenly mutes again and won't let me unmute, no matter how many times I click on unmute or use the unmute shortcut on the keyboard.

 

I have attached 2 screenshots below explaining the situation better.

 

As I said, my sound was working fine through HDMI until yesterday!

While I am not certain what the problem is, I have a couple of questions and things for you to try:

1)  Did anything change between the time it worked and when the issue occurred?  (drivers updated, software/hardware installation, etc?)

2)  Are you running the most current audio driver?


Things to try:

1)  Have you tried the "Configure" or looked through the "Properties" to make sure there's not a problem there?  (On that same window you have in your screenshots)

2)  If your PC isn't performing as well as it once did, and you don't know why, you can refresh your PC without deleting any of your personal files or changing your settings.

Note

• If you upgraded your PC from Windows 8 to Windows 8.1 and your PC has a Windows 8 recovery partition, refreshing your PC will restore Windows 8. You’ll need to upgrade to Windows 8.1 after the refresh has finished.

Warning

• Apps you installed from websites and DVDs will be removed. Apps that came with your PC and apps you installed from the Windows Store will be reinstalled. Windows puts a list of removed apps on your desktop after refreshing your PC.

To refresh your PC

1. Swipe in from the right edge of the screen, tap Settings, and then tap Change PC settings.
   (If you're using a mouse, point to the upper-right corner of the screen, move the mouse pointer down, click Settings, and then click Change PC settings.)

2. Tap or click Update and recovery, and then tap or click Recovery.

3. Under Refresh your PC without affecting your files, tap or click Get started.

4. Follow the instructions on the screen.

Also look at Windows Update History, see if the sound driver was updated recently. Is it was, roll it back via Device Manager.

Apologies for the slow reply!

 

Thank you all for your input. I haven't had time to look at the problem but it magically started working again last week. I'm not really sure what was different. I guess I'll just leave it at that!
