I have an HP HPE170t tower (win 7 pro 64) with 12Gb ram in it right now.  The mobo is a MS-7613 (Iona-GL8E).  It is currently configured with 2x4gb +2x2gb to get a total of 12gb RAM from the factory.

Here are the mobo specs from HP:

http://support.hp.co...ument/c02014355

Here are the factory configurable ram options from HP:

  • 6 GB (3 x 2 GB) DDR3 PC3-10600
  • 8 GB (4 x 2 GB) DDR3 PC3-10600
  • 12 GB (2 x 4 GB, 2 x 2 GB) DDR3 PC3-10600 <---This is what I have right now.
  • 16 GB (4 x 4 GB) DDR3 PC3-10600

I have an extra stick of 4gb DDR3 (Samsung 1Rx8 PC3-12800U-11-13-A1) that I'd like to use to give me a slight bump to 14gb if possible.  Will this work?  The config would be 3x4gb + 1x2gb.  Which slot should have the 2gb stick?  The particular part number on my spare 4gb stick is M378B5173DB0-CK0

Thanks for your input!

Gday.

Only RAM purchased in kit form is guaranteed to be compatible, adding to existing RAM, even with the same specs from the same manufacturer may have issues.

Adding a single stick in a dual channel slot will make it run in single channel mode, a slight performance hit.

Mixing RAM at different speeds, all RAM, by default, will run at the lowest common speed available to all RAM.

If your existing RAM has a different CL and/or voltage from the Samsung  Single RankCL 11, 1.5V, You are likely to have lots of problems.

There would be no discernible every day performance between 12GB and 14GB.
