Hello!!

 

Brand new to the forums and already in need of help.

 

I'm looking to upgrade my processor and need help finding out which Intel processor will work with my motherboard. I have used CPU-Z and looked on intels website but I'm still not 100% sure if I'm looking at the correct information. I have typed out basic specs of my system below but have attached the CPU-Z report to this post if you want to look at that.

 

Current Build

 

Processor = Intel i3 2120

Sandy Bridge

Socket 1155 LGA

Intel R Core TM i3-2120 [email protected]

 

Motherboard

 

Manufacture = DELL

Model = 0J3C2F "A02"

Chipset = Intel Sandy Bridge

Southbridge = Q65

Your upgrade is going to depend on what for factor case you have. 

This from a similar question on Dell Support,

"Optiplex 790 has four variants: 

* Mini-Tower (MT) 
* Desktop (DT) 
* Small Form Factor (SFF) 
* Ultra Small Form Factor (USFF) 

All these variants are shipped with Intel Q65 Express chipset. For more information on this, you may refer to the link below:

Click on the compatible products to get the list of processors compatible with your computer. Before you upgrade processor, please ensure to update system BIOS. 

Processor is not a customer replaceable unit. If you are comfortable and want to replace on your own, you may refer to the service manual of computer:

Select the form factor for detailed instructions on removing/installing hardware components. 

Dell does not recommend or offer processor upgrade but it is as your discretion in case you really wish to go ahead with it. Warranty per say, issues arising due to the upgrade will not be covered under warranty , however we will continue providing support for other issues and parts"

Thank you. I have the sff version but have transferred this to a bigger custom case.

It is going to cost you a small fortune, even for a used CPU.   If you are upgrading and thinking about any kind of overclocking, you may need a PSU upgrade.   Can you give the brand/model of the current one.
