I am having a problem on my Lenovo Y40 that just happened recently (within the last week). I have owned this laptop for 6 months now.

 

When I run File Explorer, I am unable to open my context menu on certain files (primarily zip files, certain image types, executables, folders, etc.) and it hangs the window (says Not Responding).  I have tried waiting more than 10 seconds (figuring it was a delay or something) but nothing happens. It is still able to close File Explorer, but it forces a refresh of Windows Explorer. It also doesn't let me pop it up when I click on nothing (like when you want to create a new file of some kind).

 

On Windows Explorer, it works on Recycle Bin, My Computer and blank, but the others causes it to lock up and I am forced to kill and refresh it. In both cases, after refreshing, it returns to normal after a minute. 

 

The context menu appears correctly on other programs (Steam, Opera, etc.) and I did a chkdsk and it returned nothing. AVG and MBAM also return 0 problems. What I am thinking is either there is a program that is conflicting with the menu and it just can't load its options or there is something up with Windows itself.

 

What I would like is help diagnosing and solving this issue as I feel this is serious (considering the context menu is required for a few things). I do also have ShellExView, but I want to be careful when using programs that either change the very way of Windows operations or accessing the Registry. I want to also keep the solution away from Restore Points or Reformating Windows unless it is absolutely necessary and all options are burned out.

Maybe the Windows Event Viewer can give us some clue about the problem, if not ShellExView should help...

 

Download MiniToolBox and save the file to the Desktop.
Close the browser and run the tool, check the following options:

• List last 10 Event Viewer log
• List Installed Programs

Click on Go.

I would like to solve my context menu problem first before any occurrences of malware and spyware are resolved. But if the solution requires action to be taken against them for progress purposes, I have no problem complying.

 

I also need to mention that I do not have a DVD ROM drive on this laptop and I do not have any programs that run ISOs at the moment (Daemon Tools have been flaring up my AVG). I do have a partition with the ability to do Startup Repairs or Reinstall Windows if it is absolutely necessary (but let's leave that for a last resort).

I would like to solve my context menu problem first before any occurrences of malware and spyware are resolved. But if the solution requires action to be taken against them for progress purposes, I have no problem complying.

 

Do you have any reason to suspect of malware?
 

I also need to mention that I do not have a DVD ROM drive on this laptop and I do not have any programs that run ISOs at the moment (Daemon Tools have been flaring up my AVG). I do have a partition with the ability to do Startup Repairs or Reinstall Windows if it is absolutely necessary (but let's leave that for a last resort).

Lets run a System Check...

Press + X and click Open Command Prompt (Admin)
type:

sfc /scannow

If everything is OK it should say something like "No integrity violations found"
 

• if it doesn't say "No integrity violations found" them do this:
• In the command prompt window, type or Copy & Paste the following:
  

  findstr /c:"[SR]" %windir%\logs\cbs\cbs.log >"%userprofile%\Desktop\sfcdetails.txt"

• Close the command prompt.
• Attach to your post the sfcdetails.txt file that was just placed on your Desktop
• You can safely delete the sfcdetails.txt file afterwards if you like

I won't install it yet until this problem is resolved fully, but I can still download the executable and stash it in my external's backup folder for when we are finished.

Not really. The only major malware problem this laptop had was the Superfish problem, but that was widespread on any Lenovo laptop made within the last year or two. It was labelled malware because it could sign secure transactions behind your back when it was originally designed to be a web search tool. But they were forced to release a tool that removes all it's components. MBAM destroyed the rest.

Before I attempt again, I wanted to run this by you.

 

There were a few people who had DISM lockups until they did this batch of commands:

 

net stop wuauserv
cd %systemroot%\SoftwareDistribution

net stop bits

cd %systemroot%\system32
ren catroot2 catroot2old
net start cryptsvc

 

I'll try with AVG disabled, but do you think this would help alongside it or at least on a separate attempt?

Hi,

 

Those commands are part of the ones used to Reset Windows Update components, I'm not sure they will help in your case.

 

The DISM command will check the Windows installation using data from the Microsoft servers and this could take some time. Disabling the antivirus and in case the machine is a laptop, connecting to internet by cable can eventually help.

Sorry for the massive delay.

 

I tried running the command over the past week without my firewall and I was getting virtually no luck.

 

It says the components are repairable, but the dism command to start the repair won't even reach to the progress bar portion, even after like 4 hours of leaving the Command Prompt running.

 

I am, however going to uninstall the Mail, Calender and People apps from my laptop as I do not use them. It is the reason those Livecomm.exe errors have happened.

Export the CBS folder

• Press + E to open the My Computer window
• Double-click on the C: drive, under the Hard Disk Drives category, and then scroll down to, and double click on the Windows folder.
• Find and double click on the Logs folder.
• Right-click on the CBS folder, and select Copy.
• Go back to your Desktop, right-click on it, and select Paste. You should now see a copy of the CBS folder appear on your Desktop called CBS.
• Right-click on this new folder, and navigate through Send to, and select Compressed (zipped) folder.
• A new file, also called CBS (CBS.zip), but this time with a different icon, will be created.

Actually, the problem fixed itself.

 

I recently did a massive Windows Update and it mysteriously not only fixed my problems I had with LiveComm.exe, but Skype and my context menu at the same time. I guess there were some driver conflicts with other programs that Windows got on top on.
