My computer has been going to several adware sites on its own. My HiJackThis log identifies Neededware. I have run numerous AdAware scans and McAfee scans. Some of these have identified DrPMon, but cannot delete it. I have also run some of the on-line scans suggested in your instructions. I have recently been having diffficulty logging on (Windows XP). When I try to log on, the log on begins, but then my icons disappear and the computer freezes up. I have to manually shut down and then restart. Sometimes it takes several attempts to log on. I am also unable to restore the registry to a prior date.
Any help you can provide would be greatly appreciated.
This is my HiJackThis log:

Kristy,

Thanks for the update! I look forward to working with you and I appreciate your help. I know you guys are busy.

I'll try to check back in the morning. I am going to be away from my computer most of tomorrow, so it may be tomorrow night before I can run any fixes.

Keep up the good fight!

Hello JWalsh, welcome to Geeks to Go! I am Kristy and I will be helping you.

First lets deal with nail.exe.

Please download the trial version of Ewido Security Suite here:
http://www.ewido.net/en/download/
Install it, and update the definitions to the newest files. Do NOT run a scan yet.

Please download Nailfix from here:
http://www.noidea.us...050515010747824
Unzip it to the desktop but please do NOT run it yet.

Next, please reboot your computer in Safe Mode by doing the following:
1) Restart your computer
2) After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, press F8.
3) Instead of Windows loading as normal, a menu should appear
4) Select the first option, to run Windows in Safe Mode.

For additional help in booting into Safe Mode, see the following site:
http://www.pchell.co.../safemode.shtml

Once in Safe Mode, please double-click on Nailfix.cmd. Your desktop and icons will disappear and reappear, and a window should open and close very quickly --- this is normal.

Then please run Ewido, and run a full scan. Save the logfile from the scan.

Next please run HijackThis, click Scan, and check:

F2 - REG:system.ini: Shell=Explorer.exe C:\WINDOWS\Nail.exe

Close all open windows except for HijackThis and click Fix Checked.

Restart your computer in normal mode and please post a new HijackThis log, as well as the log from the Ewido scan.

Kristy,

I ran the programs you suggested. I have posted the two logs you requested below. When I ran the HiJackthis program, the "F2 REG:system.ini: Shell=Explorer.exe" entry did not have "C:\WINDOWS\Nail.exe" (or anything else) after it. Therefore, I did not check it or click "Fix Checked." I had run a McAfee virus scan earlier, which said that it was deleting the Nail.exe file. (I hope that was the right thing to do.)

Here are the logs:

Hi Kristy,

I did everything you suggested.

The "Viewpoint" program was not present in the "add/remove programs" window. However, there was a "Viewpoint Manager" and a "Viewpoint Mediaplayer." I deleted them.

I did not find any of the six filepaths you listed. I did check the "view hidden files" option. I did find a "C:\WINDOWS\System32\WinStat12.dat", but not one with a .dll extension. I did not delete the file I found. Should I go back and delete that?

My computer is still slow starting. I received a "Windows is starting up" message that lasted longer than a minute when I rebooted. The computer seems a little slow, although (knock wood) I have not received any pop-ups or virus warnings since I rebooted. I have been rebooted for about 5 minutes.

The logs yoou requested are below.

As always, your continuing assistance is greatly appreciated!

Hello JWalsh,

Your HJT log is clean, but some things still show up in the ActiveScan log.

•Please download the Killbox by Option^Explicit. *In the event you already have Killbox, this is a new version that I need you to download.

* Save it to your desktop.

Please reboot into safe mode (continually tap the F8 key while your system is starting, select Safe Mode from the menu).

Go to Start > Control Panel > Add or Remove Programs and remove the following programs, if found:

AutoUpdate
FwBarTemp
CxtPls

Exit Add/Remove Programs.

* Next,please double-click Killbox.exe to run it.

* Select "Delete on Reboot".

* Please copy the file paths below to the clipboard by highlighting ALL of them and pressing CTRL + C

C:\WINDOWS\System32\cache32_rtneg?
C:\WINDOWS\Downloaded Program Files\ClientAX.inf
C:\WINDOWS\System32\SahImages
C:\WINDOWS\bsx32

C:\WINDOWS\bsx32.ini
C:\Program Files\CxtPls
C:\Program Files\FwBarTemp
C:\WINDOWS\Downloaded Program Files\clientax.inf

* Return to Killbox, go to the File menu, and choose "Paste from Clipboard".

* Click the red-and-white "Delete File" button. Click "Yes" at the Delete on Reboot prompt. Click "No" at the Pending Operations prompt.

If your computer does not restart automatically, please restart it manually.

Please run this online virus scan:

Hi Kristy,

I did what you recommended. I did not find any of the programs that you told me to remove in the "Aadd/Rremove Programs" window.

So far, I am not geting pop-ups. The computer is still slow starting, although I am not having trouble logging on.

The logs you requested are posted below. Thanks for your tremendous help with these problems!

Hello JWalsh,

Your HijackThis log is clean once again, but we need to take care of that IEPlugin in the registry.

Please scan your system with Ad-aware:
Ad-aware SE - Download - Home Page
  • If you have a previous version of Ad-Aware installed, during the installation of the new version you will be prompted to uninstall or keep the older version - be sure to uninstall the previous version.
  • After installing Ad-aware, you will be prompted to update the program and run a full scan. De-select all boxes so that it does not run.
  • Manually run "Ad-Aware SE Personal" and from the main screen Click on "Check for Updates Now".
  • Once the definitions have been updated:
  • Reconfigure Ad-Aware for Full Scan as per the following instructions:
    • Launch the program, and click on the Gear at the top of the start screen.
    • Under General Settings the following boxes should all be checked off: (Checked will be indicated by a green circle with a check mark in it, Un-Checked is a red circle with an X in it. If it is greyed out, those features are only available in the retail version.)
      • "Automatically save logfile"
      • Automatically quarantine objects prior to removal"
      • Safe Mode (always request confirmation)
      • Prompt to update outdated confirmation) - Change to 7 days.
    • Click the "Scanning" button (On the left side).
    • Under Drives & Folders, select "Scan within Archives"
    • Click "Click here to select Drives + folders" and select your installed hard drives.
    • Under Memory & Registry, select all options.
    • Click the "Advanced" button (On the left hand side).
    • Under "Shell Integration", select "Move deleted files to Recycle Bin".
    • Under "Log-file detail", select all options.
    • Click on the "Defaults" button on the left.
    • Type in the full url of what you want as your default homepage and searchpage e.g. http://www.google.com.
    • Click the "Tweak" button (Again, on the left hand side).
    • Expand "Scanning Engine" by clicking on the "+" (Plus) symbol and select the following:
      • "Unload recognized processes during scanning."
      • "Obtain command line of scanned processes"
      • "Scan registry for all users instead of current user only"
    • Under "Cleaning Engine", select the following:
      • "Automatically try to unregister objects prior to deletion."
      • "During removal, unload explorer and IE if necessary"
      • "Let Windows remove files in use at next reboot."
      • "Delete quarrantined objects after restoring"
    • Click on "Safety Settings" and select "Write-protect system files after repair (Hosts file, etc)"
    • Click on "Proceed" to save these Preferences.
    • Click on the "Scan Now" button on the left.
    • Under "Select Scan Mode, be sure to select "Use Custom Scanning Options".
  • Close all programs except ad-aware.
  • Click on "Next" in the bottom right corner to start the scan.
  • Run the Ad-Aware scan and allow it to remove everything it finds and then REBOOT - Even if not prompted to.
  • After you log back in, Ad-Aware may run to finalize the scan and remove any locked files that it may of found. Allow it to finish.
Please run a free online virus scan here (tick the "Auto Clean" checkbox):
http://housecall.antivirus.com/

Please run this online virus scan:
ActiveScan

Copy the results of the ActiveScan and paste them here, along with a fresh HijackThis log, and let me know how your system is working. :tazz:

Hi Kristy,

Sorry it has taken me so long to respond. My computer is working well, although still a little slow logging on.

I have run the programs you suggested and posted below the logs you requested.

I was wondering whether whatever bugs I have are reproducing themselves when I log on. Should I do anything with the restore registry function to clean out bad registry restore points?

As always, your assistance is greatly appreciated!

Hi JWalsh,

Kristy had to go out of town and she asked me to look after your log ;)

You had a question about cleaning out the registry and setting your restore points.

I will show you how to set your restore points, but first lets make sure you are clean.

As far as cleaning out the registry, you can use this program and follow these directions.
  • Please dowload: RegSeeker.
  • Click on "Clean The Registry" in the left panel.
  • Check all boxes (make sure the backup box in the lower left corner is selected!).
  • After it runs, click "Select All" on the bottom, then right-click on any selected item in the window and select "Delete Selected Items".
  • Click "Quit RegSeeker".
Now, open any of your installed programs, and make sure that everything opens ok. If so, reboot, then go back and run the RegSeeker again, do the same thing again if anything is found. When RegSeeker finds nothing else, then it's clean!

Post back when you are done and let me know how it turned out for you ;)

Thanks,

:tazz:

Hi Excal,

I have run the registry cleaner several times. It always finds entries to clean. The ones it finds now are all entries that say "File path not found."

The computer is still slow starting. It takes over a minute for Windows to start up. It also takes a little time for the log on. However, other than that, it seems to be working very well.

Thanks again for your continuing help!
