Hi,

I am hoping that someone may be able to help me.  I checked the forums for responses for the issue I'm having and found some people were able to be helped, but wasn't sure if what worked for them would work for me.

Our baby sitter was used our desktop HP that has WIN7 and shutdown via the start>shutdown method.

When I turned it on the next day, my entire desktop was missing.  It reverted back to several years ago.  I'm sure it's not at factory settings, because there are a couple programs that I loaded when I first got the computer. Our baby sitter said she didn't go to any weird websites and didn't get any messages on the screen to click 'ok' or 'cancel' to.

-

I went to sytem restore while logged in normal mode and selected a restore point from several days before this issue occurred.  This didn't work.

I then turned off my firewall and microsoft security essentials antivirus and tried a restore point from an older time period and again nothing changed.

I then selected the 'undo' restore of the first restore I tried the restore in 'safe' mode.  Nothing changed.

My last attempt was logging in 'safe mode with networking' and selecting an old restore point and nothing changed.

Kindly let me know of any suggestions to restore my computer to a recent period.

Best Regards,

Doug

Hello dbrupp,

Sorry to hear about your problem.  Hopefully we will be able to help you resolve the issue.

Go to Start > Run, and type:

C:\Users\<yourusername>\Desktop

Do your shortcuts appear in that folder?

Hello Fusionbomb,

Thank you for taking the time to assist me. I apologise for not responding sooner. I had to leave for work after my posting and just returned home.

I checked C:\Users\<yourusername>\Desktop and am happy to report that many, if not all, of my shortcuts are there.

When you have a chance, kindly further instruct me with any suggestion you may have.

Best Regards,

Doug

dbrupp,

I apologize for my delayed response, as well.  I'm glad to hear that they are located in that folder/path.  :spoton:

Please right-click your desktop (anywhere), hover over the top option View, and can you verify for me that Show desktop icons has a checkmark next to it?

No worries...life is busy and then you have to throw computer problems into the mix :smashcomp:

Kindly be advised that as requested, I right-clicked desktop (anywhere), hovered over the top option View.  I confirm  that the Show desktop icons has a checkmark next to it

I also see that "show desktop gadgets" has a checkmark next to it too.

I understand that life is busy for everyone so when time affords itself, kindly please let me know what additional information I may furnish you with or suggested steps I may try.

Your valuable time is greatly appreciated.

With Regards,

Doug

dbrupp,

All good, sir.  Thanks for confirming that for me.  Now I'm hoping these next steps will fix the issue!  If you have any questions, don't hesitate to ask us.

Type gpedit.msc in start menu and hit Enter.

desktopicons.jpg

Navigate to User Configuration > Administrative Templates > Desktop.

Now in Desktop, in the RHS pane, open Properties of Hide and disable all items on the desktop.

Configure your choice there.

If Enabled, this setting removes icons, shortcuts, and other default and user-defined items from the desktop, including Recycle Bin, Computer, and Network Locations.

To show desktop icons, ensue that the setting is Not Configured.

Hit Apply > OK.

Restart your computer and see if it has helped.

Thank you for your suggestion.  Unfortunately, my group policy does not have the "User Configuration" option.  My OS is Windows 7 Home Premium.  I'm not sure if this is the reason why.

I tried attaching what I see when I enter gpedit.msc but wasn't able to.

On the navigation pane on the left side, I see:

Favorites

-Desktop

-Downloads

-Recent Places

Libraries

-Documents

-Music

-Pictures

-Videos

Computer

Network

I also went to C:\Windows\System32\GroupPolicy and that folder is empty.

Thanks again for all of your help.

-Doug

That would indeed be the reason why.  My apologies!  :prop:   You are very welcome, by the way.  :yeah:

Your desktop icons can sometimes become hidden by malware or other applications. Showing your hidden files and folders can resolve this issue.

Follow these steps to display hidden files and folders.

  1. Open Folder Options by clicking the Start button, clicking Control Panel, clicking Appearance and Personalization, and then clicking Folder Options.
  2. Click the View tab, click Show hidden files, folders, and drives, and then click OK.

    view_search_hidden_files_folder_windows.

  3. Look for the missing icons on your desktop, right-click the icon you want to display, and then click Properties.
  4. Next to Attributes, uncheck the Hidden box, and then click OK.
  5. Repeat steps 3 and 4 for each icon you want to display.
    • Important Note: Windows keeps some files like important operating system files hidden by default. Un-hiding all files can lead to serious issues like data loss or corruption, if they are accidentally deleted. To reduce this possibility, follow the steps below to hide these files from view.
  6. Open Folder options by clicking the Start Button, clicking Control Panel, clicking Appearance and Personalization, and then clicking Folder Options.
  7. Click the View tab, click Don't show hidden files, folders, and drives, and then click OK.

    show-hidden-files-and-folders-in-windows

Thanks for your cooperation and patience, Doug.  Keep us informed!

Edit:  Thanks for the screenshot instructions, iammykyl.

I check marked the 'Show hidden files, folders, and drives' > apply> ok. (I tried with just ok, but it didn't allow the selection to remain checked so I clicked apply first then ok),  I then checke my desktop and the missing icons, folders, saved docs...were not there; so, I restarted my PC and unfortunately, the icons still didn't show up.

I looked at 'Show hidden files, folders, and drives' again to make sure it was checked still and it was.

So I went in to C:\Users\<myusername>\Desktop  and found one program, dropbox, and the 'hidden' box at attributes was already unchecked.

(this is where I try to give some additional information that you may or may not find useful)

I saved my screen shot from paint as a jpeg on my desktop, but when I tried to add it from the 'Attach Files' feature by clicking on browse, it can't be found.  I do see the .jpeg saved on my desktop so I then tried opening it and it won't open.  I also tried to save a .doc to see if that file type will open and I get a message that 'the file could not be found' even though I just saved it to my desktop.

I checked the properties of 2 icons that are on my desktop. One is CCleaner and the other is Adobe Reader XI.  The details tab in properties shows that these are from March 25, 2014.

I suspect that the PC reverted back to this time period and is missing all of the microsoft kb updates. But what is interesting is that my C:\Users...folder is showing files and programs with date modified April 2015.

Sorry for being so wordy, just trying to give as much information as possible that I feel may be helpful.

Kindly let me know if you have any questions or additional suggestions.

Best Regards,

Doug

dbrupp,

No need to apologize, I appreciate the additional information.  I have a couple more ideas/suggestions for us to try.

Let's show the hidden files and folders again, like we did in my last post, but this time after clicking Apply and OK (Step 2), I want you to click

Start > Computer > Local Disk (C:) > Users > [username] > Appdata (transparent folder, normally hidden) > Local

Once in the Local folder, you will need to scroll down to the IconCache file, once you locate this file, right-click it and select Delete.

Reboot your machine after deleting the file, it will rebuild it, and you may notice the return of your desktop icons.

If this doesn't help, we may need to check your machine for malicious software.  :smashcomp:

Edit:  No worries about the screenshot not pasting in, I'm pretty sure I know what error message you got when trying to launch gpedit.msc   :)

Fusionbomb,

I deleted the IconCache file that you pointed me to and rebooted my PC. Unfortunately, my icons didn't re-appear.

I went back to Start > Computer > Local Disk (C:) > Users > [username] > Appdata (transparent folder, normally hidden) > Local
and didn't see the IconCache file rebuilt.  It's still in my recycle bin though incase I need to restore it. :yeah:

I changed the  'Show hidden files, folders, and drives'  back to "don't show".

Does this mean that it's time to check for malicious software that may be preventing me from restoring my PC to a previous time period?

I appreciate the time you are spending to help me with this.

Thanks,

Doug

:headscratch:

How odd.  I'm just curious... what happens if you open your desktop folder, Ctrl + A (selects everything), right click and Send to Desktop?  Do the shortcuts stick around after a reboot?

Honestly, Doug, I'm not sure what may have caused this.  I will continue to research the issue and see if I can find any additional possible fixes, but hopefully someone else can chime in soon with some good information.

If you would like to run the program below it may or may not be of assistance, I was more or less thinking it may expose a particular malware that could be the culprit.  However, this is just optional.  :D

I opened the desktop folder, selected everything > when I right clicked and hovered on "send to" the only options were "documents" or "DVD RW Drive E".

So, I ran the minitoolbox.  Here are the results:
