Ran into trouble trying to record files from my E:drive to a CD-R disk  "for computer burning." Process started well but stopped when this error message appeared -- Microsoft Office Word

                    "Incorrect function"

The desktop is an XP and I have copied data to a CD before.

What does the error message mean? What ought I do to fix the problem?

Thank you. ... batpark

What are the exact steps you are taking to do this?

The easiest is to select the file then right click on then and select Send to and pick the optical drive as the target. Then you open the optical drive and Burn file to disc.

ztrucker: Your suggested way worked fine , up to a point. When I now click Start\My Computer\CD Drive I see the files I sent listed there under the heading "Files ready to be wrritten to the CD."

Would you please tell me what I do next? FWIW, I HAVE copied files to a CD with this desktop before. But, at 90, I can't recall how. ..... batpark

I don't have a XP system to use any more so I'm going from memory, but you would Insert a CD-R then right click on Files ready to be wrritten to the CD and select Burn or Write.

You could also install a program like CDBurnerXP or ImgBurn and use them to select the files and folders you want and write them to a CD.

Thanks. That seems right, and I will try it.

Since last posting, following your earlier tips, I managed to copy some 120 photos from my pc to a CD. I checked and can actually see the individual photos retrieving them from the disk. Sounds good, right?

But when I click Start\MyComputer\D and right-click the icon I learn that the disk has a capacity of 680MB of which 679MB are free. Surely my 120 photos take up more than 1MB.  Do I REALLY have those photos on the disk? Can you spot what I am doing wrong? Thank you for your help. .... batpark

Open the CD. If you can view all the pictures then they are there.

Most of my pictures are in the 150KB to 4-5MB range, though some are much larger.

Look at them on the hard drive and on the CD in Details view to see actual sizes.

ztruker: Success! I just read all your suggestions and walked through them SLOWLY. I have copied all the files i wanted to.

Looking back, my bigest problem was failure to recognize that there is a separate step required --- after moving files to the CD -- to actually burn them.

Thank you so much for your help. ...batpark
