I have a Dell SK-8135 keyboard with mute, stop, pause-etc. But it only seems to work WMP. I want to control my VLC media player on Win7 if possible. TY

What make and model is the computer please?
If not a similar Dell computer, the Dell functions of the keyboard are not likely to work except in the WMP player. In other words it may be a compatibility problem between the keyboard and the computer.
Let us know the make and model of computer then some research of functions and abilities can be done.
There is also the possibility of VLC player not being able to recognise specialised keyboard functions, even if the rest of the system can.

Hey Nev,
It is a Dell Optiplex GX620 32 bit. VLC does have keyboard shortcuts that I just found-that will work. I was just hoping that the Dell keyboard's media keys (pause, play, forward, reverse) would work. The volume knob and mute button work now. The mute button is the main thing I wanted to have when the phone rings. Not everyone is a metal fan!!

Hi, thanks for the feedback, being both of Dell origins, that tells me that the media keys in general and associated software as in Windows Media Player will be connected, however, VLC player being a third party and also open source software, it will be VLC that isn't able to recognise some of the media keys.
However as you have already found, some keys can be configured into VLC such as the volume and mute, however you may need to configure other keys, such as letters and number combinations to achieve stop, start, forward, or back.

Thanks-sorry for the late reply. Yes that is what has happened. The mute feature is the main one I wanted. Then after reading the VLC info and finding their shortcuts-forward or reverse I usually don't use those and won't miss them. But nostalgia might kick in and I might use WMP sometime-just to use all of the keyboard buttons! So you can close this one out if you want!
