Hi, sorry to be a pain, do you have any suggestions? My PC seems to be crashing randomly, it can happen anytime. I was watching a DVD on it and the sound started to break up and the picture juddered but the disk kept playing. I tried another disk, but same thing happened, these were original DVD's. I also tried it in my other DVD drive same problem. When I copy files to my DVD burner sometimes they work sometimes they don't. I'm guessing that the PC and drives are acting the same way when copying as playing.
When I do get this problem and I restart the PC, I mostly get up to the password part of the reboot, I key in the password the screen flickers a few line across it and restarts. This can go on for 1min to 30 mins, when I get past this it takes ages to finally boot up. Once the restart is complete it can work well or just flicker and restart its self anytime. I have restared in safe mode and it seems to be fine. A friend suggested it may be the power supply.
Any help much appreciated.

can you give some info on your system- pre-built (dell, HP, compaq etc) or custom built, CPU type and speed, graphics card info, and psu brand and wattage.

has thas been ongoing or a recent development? if recent, did you add anything to the system recently, such as a second DVD drive, new video card, etc.

I'm not sure where to go about finding the voltage and temps. But hope this helps.

The computer is custom built.

Processor: AMD Athlon XP 2000+
Motherboard: K7 Triton 400
Graphics card: NVIDIA: GeForce MX440-SE
DVD Drives are: Pioneer DVD-RW DVR-109 & Matshita DVD-rom SR-8585
Power supply is a switching power supply Model: ADT350
Input 115v-8a 60Hz
230v-4a 50Hz
Output 350W Max.

I did put the Pioneer DVD-RW in a few months ago to replace an old one which was giving me problems. But the old one may be OK as I get similar problems with the new one. They both fail to burn DVDs probably 3 out of 10 fail (approx). But the PC did'nt restart with the old DVD burner like it does now.

Im seeing 2 problems-
1- the CPU is really hot! 63c while running everest is really high, I dont like to see temps that high when its under load. it can take that temp loaded, but if thats the idle tmp, that could be your reboots. its shutting down to protect itself.

1.5, related- doby, you know the voltages settings for AMD cpu's. is his voltage high? or could that be related to...

2- overvoltage on the 12V rail. its kicking out 12.74, which falls outside acceptable 5% deviations. this can cause all kinds of problems throughout the system.

are you using a hsf (heatsink+fan) that came with the cpu? thermal pad or paste to bond them? you will probably need to take the hsf off, clean it and the cpu, then apply new thermal paste and reseat the hsf.

a new power supply would also be in order. antec, thermaltake, and enermax are good brands, delivering rated power consistently.

Audioboy is correct about both things, first the vcore is set to high and this could very well overheat the cpu.

What core is the cpu either Palomino, Thoroughbreed, thorton, according to amd specs a 2000+ could be any of these and the all have different vcore settings so we need to know witch.

For now go into bios and set the vcore to 1.65 this will be better than what you are now running.

2nd again audioboy nailed this one to the 12v rail is overvolting it should read no more than 12.6V maybe why the dvd's are having problems so I would consider a new psu. Name brand any audioboy suggesred at least 400w

The make of the power supply i have is a Q-tec is this OK or a rubbish make. I didn't build the PC myself but I'm sure the fan came with the cpu as it has AMD printed on it. Would I be better cleaning the fan etc as you suggest first and see how it goes or will I get a new power supply as well?

Qtech = "rubish make" better get a new one some psu's like that have no overvolt protection and you are showing signs of a overvolt.

Lower the vcore and report back your temps before you clean and reapply thermal paste to the hs.

We still also need to know what caore the cpu is to get the final vcore setting, if you don't know then see if you have the opn number of the proccesor, post it and I will look it up.

I can't alter the vcore setting its greyed out also where will I find the opn number for the processor, if I need to take the fan off I'll need to get some thermal paste first for reconnecting it.

Sorry I know I'm not much help :tazz:

Went back into Everst software went into motherboard then cpu.
Under CPU Properties it lists CPU Alias: Palomino

Ok, everest is reporting it as a palomino core the vcore for that core cpu is 1.75 yours is set at 1.78 according to everest thats ok and not a problem so leave it alone.

You need to get the cpu temp down it should be 40c to 45c when at idle.
How many case fans do you have?
Try taking off the side case to see if it lowers the temp some and report back how much.
