Hi!

We have had it with the $200 cable bill from Time Warner. The bundle is bogus, and the service stinks! We'd like to stream from our computer and use Netflix, and we are both pretty tech-phobic. Here's what we have:

  • HP ENVY TouchSmart 17 Notebook PC, running Windows 8 (which I HATE, but that's for a different thread!)
  • Computer runs 32 Bit flash player and Intel Graphics Diver and WiDi (not sure what the video card is named, so let me know what to look for and I'll open my programs to find out)
  • Computer has Windows Media Player
  • Panasonic Viera TV with HDMI

I bought the computer because 1) my brother recommended it (should have been my first clue to avoid it) 2) it has a ton of connection/card options 3) it's portable enough to park next to the TV.

What is required to get network TV and Netflix? I have bought the Viera dongle and have no idea how to make it work. I've also looked into buying a DVR and a stick like Hulu or Amazon Prime, but again, I'm not sure what all is required with my set up to get what I want. Not interested in premium movie channels or other fancy stuff. Your advice is very much appreciated. Just remember, be gentle - we're babes here!

can you list the tv and laptop model numbers, or post links to them so i can see if it's a smart tv and the laptops full specifications.

you don't need a dvr or hulu or amazon prime dongles.

first thing you need to know is the download speed of your internet, if you don't know it you can run a speed test here :- http://www.speedtest.net/

for a good streaming experience i'd want at least 5Mb's download speed but then again i do other things while streaming and think the minimum required is about 2Mb download speed, so if you have anything higher than that then you should be good to go, anything lower then you will probably find what your watching will keep stop starting while it buffers more data and ruin the experience for you.

this is a video showing how to use your veira dongle :-

now you have multiple options open to you on how you can connect and watch network tv and netflix, some you'd need to use your laptop others you can just use the tv only if it's a smart tv.

the above video should deal with using just the tv to connect either by ethernet cable or your wireless viera dongle to get on the internet, then it's just a case of following your tv's manual to use it's smart features to connect to your netflix account or any other network tv options available to you in your area, for example the uk i have bbc iplayer, demand 5 etc. etc.

the other options open to you is to connect the laptop to the tv again either wired or wireless and then use it like a second monitor to display what you want to watch.

personally i always try to connect using a physical connection rather than wireless when ever possible, so i'd use a hdmi cable to connect your laptop to the tv if possible, this link explains how to do that :- http://h20435.www2.h...01#.VWdL5C85xpg
