My friend wanted me to look at his netbook PC which had contracted some serious viruses.

I managed to remove them all, and then delete all of the offending malware, however at some stage of the process a virus changed his admin password.

I managed to get access to the desktop by booting into safe mode, which for some reason accepted the old password on maybe the 5th try.

Now that I'm in Windows I can't change or remove the user account password, nor can I create a password reset disk, because I don't know (or the computer won't accept) the current password.

At this stage I would normally just format the drive and do a clean install, but my friend is adamant that I don't.

I have a Windows repair disk on hand, but this netbook has no disk drive.

Is there a method that will allow me to recover this password, or remove/reset it from within Windows? I'm not confident that if I reboot I can get to the desktop again.

To my knowledge the viruses are gone, so I'm posting this in the Windows 7 section.

Sorry but we are bound by the TOS of this site not to offer any help bypassing a password on a system

Due to the nature of online help we are not able to verify ownership, and will not be able to help bypass or recover any user passwords, cd keys, license codes, serial numbers, etc.

I would encourage you to follow the instructions here and post in the malware removal forum, there is a chance that cleaning up the machine properly may fix the issue.
