I recently did a Norton Virus Scan and found that my brother had someone got the Bloodhound.W32.EP virus into our system. I have traced it to file:
C:\WINDOWS\Temp\2.tmp.exe
Norton couldn't do anything with the virus as they couldn't delete the file because it's essential to my computer and so on so on. What do I do?!?! I'm running XP as an OS and this is the first time I have ever contracted a virus of note that can not be simply fixed or deleted. so please <_<

Hi xHHHx, welcome to GTG! <_<

Generally, anything running from a temp file is bad news. First, please run a free online virus scan here (tick the "Auto Clean checkbox):
http://housecall.antivirus.com/

And a free trojan scan here:
http://www.moosoft.com/

If the problem persists, Click Here to download TheKillbox. Extract TheKillBox.exe from the zip file and double click it to open it up. In the 'Enter Full Path and Filename to Delete' box, copy and paste these entries one by one, clicking 'Find and Kill This File' after each one:
C:\WINDOWS\Temp\2.tmp.exe

Click 'Exit' when done.

Note: If you receive a message such as: "Component 'MsComCtl.ocx' or one of its dependencies not correctly registered: a file is missing or invalid." when trying to run TheKillbox, download and run: http://www.javacools...ngfilesetup.exe. Then try TheKillbox again.

You geeks are a God send! I've done that and although I think the virus' have gone my computer is running terribly slow. I run an Ad Aware scan to get rid of all adware and I ran both those scans you suggested but it's still very slow [especially when logging on] I was advised to re-install windows originally which I did, would this explain why it takes so long to log on? Sometimes also when it says "loading personal details..." during the log on nothing happens, then i press Ctrl+Alt+Del and it'll load?!?! Is my computer dead?

Let's start with the system file checker. Click Start -> Run, type sfc /scannow at the command prompt and click okay. Have your Windows CD ready.

OK. I tried that and nothing much happened. A little bar came up saying something along the lines of checking that all Windows files were in their original form and then it vanished. Im confused?!?

Also, I occasionally get popups saying "your virtual memory too low" would that explain the computers slowness?

Let us take a closer look at what is running on your PC. We'll need you to use a free diagnostic tool (HiJackThis) and post a log back here with the results.

Click the HijackThis Guide in my signature, download it and follow the instructions in the guide.

Most of what it lists will be harmless or even essential, DO NOT delete or modify anything yet! Someone will be along to tell you what steps to take after you post the contents of the scan results.

Download Ad-aware from: http://www.lavasoft.de/res/aaw6.exe

Install the program and launch it.

First, in the main window, look in the bottom right corner and click on Check for updates now and download the latest reference files.

Next, we need to configure Ad-aware for a full scan.

-> Click on the Gear icon (second from the left) to access the preferences/settings window

1. In the General window make sure the following are selected:
  • Automatically save log-file
  • Automatically quarantine objects prior to removal
  • Safe Mode (always request confirmation)
2. Click on the Scanning button on the left and select :
  • Scan Within Archives
  • Scan Active Processes
  • Scan Registry
  • Deep Scan Registry
  • Scan my IE favorites for banned URL’s
  • Scan my Hosts file
  • Under Click here to select drives + folders, choose:
  • All of your hard drives
-> Click on the Advanced button on the left and select:
  • Include additional process information
  • Include additional file information
  • Include environment information
  • Include additional object details
-> Click the Tweak button and select:
  • Under the Scanning Engine:
    • Unload recognized processes during scanning
    • Include basic Ad-aware settings in logfile
    • Include additional Ad-aware settings in logfile
  • Under the Cleaning Engine:
    • Let Windows remove files in use at next reboot
-> Click on Proceed to save the settings.

-> Click Start and on the next screen choose Activate in-depth Scan at the bottom of the page and then choose:
  • Use Custom Scanning Options
-> Click Next and Ad-aware will scan your hard drive(s) with the options you have selected.

-> Save the log file when it asks and then click Finish

-> When finished, mark everything for removal and get rid of it. (Right-click the window and choose Select All from the drop down menu and click Next).

-> Reboot your computer.

If you would please, rescan with HijackThis and post a fresh log in this same topic.

You're getting closer, hang in there <_<. Multiple viruses/trojans. Before we start cleaning up your log please run a free online virus scan here:

Also just noticed you've been hijacked. You need to get rid of WebHancer. Go to "Start", "Control Panel", then "Add/Remove Programs" and remove it.
