Hello Justin (jdmccright) and welcome to Geeks to Go

As an introduction, please note that I am not Superhuman, I do not know everything, but what I do know has taken me years to learn. I am happy to pass on this information to you, but please bear in mind that I am also fallible.

Before we get underway, you may wish to print these instructions for easy reference during the fix, although please be aware that many of the required URLs are hyperlinks in the red names shown on your screen. Part of the fix may require you to be in Safe Mode, which may not allow you to access the internet, or my instructions!

You have quite a mixture of malware and Trojans that need to be eradicated.

To start please download the following programmes, we will run them later. Please save them to a place that you will remember, I suggest the Desktop:

Killbox by Option^Explicit
CWShredder
CCleaner
Ewido Security Suite
cwsserviceemove.reg file

Go to Start>Run and type Services.msc then hit OK
Scroll down and find this service:

System Startup Service (SvcProc)

When you find it, double-click on it. In the next window that opens, click the Stop button, then click on Properties and under the General Tab, change the Startup Type to Disabled. Now hit Apply and then OK.

Run HiJackThis. Click on None of the above, just start the program. Now, click on the Config button (bottom right), then click on Misc Tools, then click on Delete an NT Service a window will pop up. Enter this item into that field (copy and paste):

SvcProc

Click OK.

It should pull up information about the service, when it asks if you want to reboot now click YES

Please open the trial version of Ewido Security Suite, and update the definitions to the latest files. Do NOT run a scan yet.

Please install Nailfix, unzip it to the desktop but please do NOT run it yet.

Next, please reboot your computer in Safe Mode by doing the following:
1) Restart your computer
2) After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, press F8.
3) Instead of Windows loading as normal, a menu should appear
4) Select the first option, to run Windows in Safe Mode.

For additional help in booting into Safe Mode, see the following site:

Safe Mode

Once in Safe Mode, please double-click on Nailfix.cmd. Your desktop and icons will disappear and reappear, and a window should open and close very quickly --- this is normal.

Install Ewido Security Suite (it is a 14-day trial version of the programme).
  • Launch ewido, there should be an icon on your desktop double-click it.
  • The programme will prompt you to update click the OK button
  • The programme will now go to the main screen
You will need to update ewido to the latest definition files.
  • On the left hand side of the main screen click update
  • Click on Start
The update will start and a progress bar will show the updates being installed.
Once the updates are installed do the following:
  • Click on scanner
  • Make sure the following boxes are checked before scanning:
    • Binder
    • Crypter
    • Archives
  • Click on Start Scan
  • Let the programme scan the machine
While the scan is in progress you will be prompted to clean files, click OK

Once the scan has completed, there will be a button located on the bottom of the screen named Save report
  • Click Save report
  • Save the report to your desktop and include it in your reply.
Now please install CWShredder, and run it. Click Check For Update, then Fix and then OK followed by Next, let it fix everything it asks about
Unzip cwsserviceemove.reg file to your desktop. While in safe mode, double click on it and grant it permission to add the registry items.

Please re-open HiJackThis and scan. Check the boxes next to all the entries listed below.

O2 - BHO: (no name) - {FDD3B846-8D59-4ffb-8758-209B6AD74ACC} - (no file)
O23 - Service: System Startup Service (SvcProc) - Unknown owner - C:\WINDOWS\svcproc.exe (file missing)

Now close all windows other than HiJackThis, then click Fix Checked.

Please install Killbox by Option^Explicit.

*Extract the programme to your desktop and double-click on its folder, then double-click on Killbox.exe to start the programme.
*In the Killbox programme, select the Delete on Reboot option.
*Open the text file with these instructions in it, and copy the file name below to the clipboard by highlighting them and pressing Control-C:

C:\WINDOWS\Nail.exe

*Return to Killbox, go to the File menu, and choose "Paste from Clipboard".

*Click the red-and-white "Delete File" button. Click "Yes" at the Delete on Reboot prompt. Click "No" at the Pending Operations prompt.

If you receive a message such as: "Component 'MsComCtl.ocx' or one of its dependencies not correctly registered: a file is missing or invalid." when trying to run TheKillbox, click download and run missingfilesetup.exe. Then try TheKillbox again.

There is almost certainly bound to be some junk (leftover bits and pieces) on your system that is doing nothing but taking up space. I would recommend that you run CCleaner. Install it, update it, check the default setting in the left-hand pane, Analyze, Run Cleaner. You may be fairly surprised by how much it finds.

Post back a fresh HijackThis log and I will take another look.

Okay, I did as you suggested. Only a few things to report.

1. During the Ewido Security Suite scan, the option to select "Archives" for scanning was greyed out, so I was unable to check it. Here's the scan report:

2. After running CWShredder, there was nothing to fix.

3. After running HijackThis, all of the suggested lines except the last one were Fixed, the last not being present , thus could not Fix that one.

4. The Killbox Delete on Reboot instruction was run without any problems.

5. CCleaner was run and then rebooted to Normal mode. After boot up was complete, a message box popped up stating that "Windows could not find C:\WINDOWS\Nail.exe...".

6. HijackThis was rerun and the log is posted below:

7. After rebooting again, the same "Windows could not ifind C:\WINDOWS\Nail.exe..." message box appeared. A step in the right direction it seems...thanks so far! Now, what's next?

Phil,
I've also noticed that when I click my "Home" button in Internet Explorer, the page, www.msnbc.msn.com, will load but then a message box immediately appears, saying "Internet Explorer is unable to load http://www.msnbc.msn.com/." Just food for thought...

Hello again Justin

How weird to have Windoze not finding Nail, Ewido deleting Nail, and HJT telling us it still exists.

I personally think that it is gone, but for some reason the registry entry still exists.

Let's just make sure.

Please re-open HiJackThis and scan. Check the boxes next to all the entries listed below.

F2 - REG:system.ini: Shell=Explorer.exe C:\WINDOWS\Nail.exe

Please download and run Silent Runners

* Please right click this link and choose save (link) as to download:Silent Runners.
* Save it to the desktop.
* Run Silent Runner's by doubleclicking the "Silent Runners" icon on your desktop.
* You will see a text file appear on the desktop - it's not done yet, just let it run (it won't appear to be doing anything!)
* Once you receive the prompt "All Done!", double-click on the new text file on the desktop and copy that entire log and paste it here.

*NOTE* If you receive any warning message about scripts, please choose to allow the script to run.

Not sure what is causing the error in your home page choice, but open MSIE, choose TOOLS>INTERNET OPTIONS>GENERAL. In the Home Page box type in http://www.google.com then click APPLY>OK

Post back the two logs (HJT and Silent Runners) in your reply please.

Phil,
Nail.exe appears to be gone as it no longer shows up in the HJT log and the error where Windows cannot find the file no longer appears. Unfortunately, I could not run Silent Runners, saying This script requires Windows Management Instrumentation" to run." When I went into Administrative Tools/Services, the WMI was set to Manual and was already started. A companion WMI Driver Extensions was also present, also set to manual but not started. I attempted to restart the WMI and start the Driver Extensions, but that had no effect...it still would not run. The HJT log is below:

As for the IE error I mentioned before, i was mistaken...the error happens when a certain popup appears after the home page finishes loading (I think), saying "IE cannot open the Internet site http://www.msnbc.msn.com/. Operation aborted.". Then the page disappears and displays "the page cannot be displayed". Haven't seen it happen on any other page or any other popup. Maybe not related to this, but I'm reporting it anyway.

Let me know what you can suggest next! Thanks, Phil!

Congratulations! your new log is clean. :tazz: Just a little bit more to do to prevent further infection.

Reset and Re-enable your System Restore to remove bad files that have been backed up by Windows. The files in System Restore are protected to prevent any programmes changing them. This is the only way to clean these files: (You will lose all previous restore points which are likely to be infected.)

To reset your restore points, please note that you will need to log into your computer with an account which has full administrator access. You will know if the account has administrator access because you will be able to see the System Restore tab. If the tab is missing, you are logged in under a limited account.

(Windows XP)
1. Turn off System Restore. On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
Check Turn off System Restore.
Click Apply, and then click OK.
2. Reboot.

3. Turn ON System Restore. On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
UN-Check *Turn off System Restore*.
Click Apply, and then click OK.
I recommend going to the following link and update as recommended by Microsoft. This adds more security and extra features including a pop-up blocker for Internet Explorer. Microsoft Update

Now that everything is fixed, I suggest that you consider getting these programmes to help keep the computer clean:

SPYWARE BLASTER - Blocks bad ActiveX items from installing on your computer.
AD-AWARE PERSONAL – A fine free malware detector and removal programme
SPYBOT S&D – Excellent free spyware detector and removal programme
GOOGLE TOOLBAR - Blocks many unwanted pop-ups in Internet Explorer.
FIREFOX - Safer alternative to the Internet Explorer web browser.
AVG ANTIVIRUS - Free antivirus programme if you currently are not using one.
ZONEALARM - Free firewall programme if you currently are not using one.

Remember to update these frequently.

Please note that whilst there is nothing wrong in having more than one spyware detector/prevention programmes for “on demand” scanning, having two or more antivirus systems is not recommended as they may well interfere with each other.

You may also want to read "How did I get infected in the first place" to learn how to better secure your computer.

Be sure to keep Windows and your Anti-Virus updated. ;)

Please send me a HJT log for Jonie's settings to be sure. Your pop-up error appears to me, to be a programme stopping the new page from loading. Perhaps now is a good time to switch to FireFox as your default browser if you continue to have problems.

Hello again Justin

Not quite clean yet. Please logon as your wife Jonie.

Close all programmes leaving only HijackThis running. Place a checkmark against the following:

R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Bar = http://websearch.drs...esearch.cgi?id=
R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Page = http://websearch.drs...esearch.cgi?id=
R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\SearchURL,(Default) = websearch.drsnsrch.com/q.cgi?q=

Click on Fix Checked when finished and exit HijackThis.

Post back a fresh HijackThis log from Jonie's settings and I'll take another look.

Sorry it's been a few days since I've been able to write back. Here is the log from Jonie's login. Unfortunately, now I'm finding a lot of other Windows components aren't working properly...namely Windows Installer and Windows Update. And uninstalling SP2 (which supposedly includes WI V3.1) and reinstalling it doesn't help. I fear all this may be in vain as it looks as if I must reinstall Windows XP. Anyway, here's the HJT log:

Hello again Justin

Jonie's log is now clean. Just before you embark upon that most hated of all PC deeds (Format C: = 100% file compression), try a couple of other things to correct the situation.

To fix the missing XP files, download this programme to your desktop

XP Home:

Missing Files XP Home

XP Professional:

Missing Files XP Pro.

Double-click the programme on your desktop to install the missing files.

That might help you and also try this.

Here's what you do to run the system file checker. Open a command prompt (Start -> Run - type CMD and hit enter). Type in SFC /SCANNOW (note the space after SFC) and hit enter. You'll need your XP disc handy.

This will check all your system files and replace any which are different from the original Microsoft versions.

That might just save you the problem of reformatting, which is never easy. If you have to do a reformat, consider temporarily installing a second hard drive (small volume drives are very cheap these days) and transferring everything you wish to keep to it, then reformat the original, and when it is done, transfer the saved items back to the original.

Phil,
After several attempts to rid my system of all the Windows buggers, I ended up resorting to the reinstall...yuck. But I'm gonna be smart and have a fresh XP install tucked away on an extra HDD. Thank you for all your help and I'd welcome any further advice you may have, Phil!

Hello Justin

There's nothing wrong in doing a reformat and reinstall; in fact it's quite nice knowing everything to be fresh and clean. It's just time consuming, even with a broadband internet connection.

I use a removable 2nd HDD that is accessible from the front of my PC on a slide mechanism, and on it are the set-up files for all the programmes I use. It makes reinstalling very quick and if you do it often enough, you tend to remember things like address book locations for transferring data rather than losing it in a reformat.

Your idea of having a 2nd OS on a 2nd HDD is quite novel. All you have to do is switch the boot order in the BIOS and Robert's your father's brother.

The only advice I would give is, install 1 antivirus, 1 antispyware and an alternative browser to MSIE. Have other spyware detector/cleaner programmes for on demand scanning.

I shall be closing this thread on Friday as I start my holiday (vacation) then.

Good luck Justin, I wish you happy and safe surfing.
