I have a samsung epic 4G with unlimited talk text data with sprint.I want to tether my phone to my laptop so I can use my laptop online but when I tether my phone displays meor invalid password or user name and my laptop displays message unable to connect to web.my laptop has windows 8.1 installed

It must be your carrier problem, does your contract with sprint allow you to use the data connection to tether? They can detect it when you use tethering and may block any traffic from that. Please check with your carrier whether you should be able to use tethering.
