First, download and install CleanUp! but do not run it yet *NOTE* Cleanup deletes EVERYTHING out of temp/temporary folders and does not make backups.

Download, install, and update Ewido Security Suite
  • Install ewido security suite
  • Launch ewido, there should be a big E icon on your desktop, double-click it.
  • The program will prompt you to update click the OK button
  • The program will now go to the main screen
You will need to update ewido to the latest definition files.
  • On the left hand side of the main screen click update
  • Click on Start
The update will start and a progress bar will show the updates being installed.
After the updates are installed, exit Ewido

Reboot into Safe Mode. You can do this by restarting your computer and continually tapping the F8 key until a menu appears. Use your up arrow key to highlight Safe Mode, then hit enter.

Once in Safe Mode, Run Cleanup! by double-clicking the icon on your desktop (or from the Start > All Programs menu).

After you're done running Cleanup! follow the instructions below
  • Run Ewido.
  • Click on scanner
  • Make sure the following boxes are checked before scanning:
    • Binder
    • Crypter
    • Archives
  • Click on Start Scan
  • Let the program scan the machine
While the scan is in progress you will be prompted to clean the first infected file it finds. Choose "clean", then put a check next to "Perform action on all infections" in the left corner of the box so you don't have to sit and watch Ewido the whole time. Click OK.

Once the scan has completed, there will be a button located on the bottom of the screen named Save report
  • Click Save report
  • Save the report to your desktop
Reboot into normal mode.

Go to Start > Control Panel > Add or Remove Programs and remove the following:

SpySheriff

Exit Add or Remove Programs.

Delete the following, in bold, if found:

C:\Program Files\SpySheriff <-whole folder
:\WINDOWS\System32\P2P Networking <-whole folder
C:\Windows\Desktop.html
C:\winstall.exe

Make sure you are disconnected from the Internet and that all programs and windows are closed. Run HiJackThis. Place a check next to the following items, if found, and click FIX CHECKED:

R3 - URLSearchHook: (no name) - _{00D6A7E7-4A97-456f-848A-3B75BF7554D7} - (no file)

Close HiJackThis.

RIGHT-CLICK HERE and go to Save As (in IE it's "Save Target As") in order to download the smitfraud reg to your desktop.

Double-click smitfraud.reg on your desktop. When asked if you want to merge with the registry click YES. After the merged successfully prompt, please reboot your computer.

You should be able to change your desktop back to normal now.

Navigate to this folder using Windows Explorer:

C:\Windows\Prefetch

Delete ALL files inside of the Prefetch folder (do NOT delete the folder, just the files inside).

Post the report from Ewido and a new HiJackThis log into this topic.

I also have 2 questions if you don't mind!

1) I am getting a warning from Norton about something called Bloodhound.W32.EP (C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\WININET.DLL) but Norton is unable to repair it - should I go in and manually delete that file?

2) Is PS Guard something that comes with Ewido, or is that another malicious program that I should uninstall?

Thank you SO MUCH! Oh, and yes, my desktop is once again under my control - terrific.

1) I am getting a warning from Norton about something called Bloodhound.W32.EP (C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\WININET.DLL) but Norton is unable to repair it - should I go in and manually delete that file?

Please do not delete that file. The wininet.dll is a legitimate system file. We will check to see if the file has actually be overwritten by malware.

2) Is PS Guard something that comes with Ewido, or is that another malicious program that I should uninstall?

It is another malicious program

Go to Start > Control Panel > Add or Remove Programs and remove the following:

PSGuard

Exit Add or Remove Programs.

Delete the following folder, if found:

C:\Program Files\PSGuard

Run HiJackThis. Place a check next to the following item and click FIX CHECKED:

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [PSGuard] C:\Program Files\PSGuard\PSGuard.exe

Close HijackThis.

Then Please go here:
http://virusscan.jotti.org/

Click the browse button and locate this file:
C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\WININET.DLL

Click the submit button and copy the results and paste them here.

Ok, I need to look to make sure that is the only infected wininet.dll on your system:

Copy everything in the code box below and paste it into notepad. Go up to "File > Save As..." and click the drop-down box to change the "Save As Type" to "All Files". Save it as wininet.bat on your desktop.

dir %Systemdrive%\wininet.dll /a h /s > files.txt
start notepad files.txt

Double click wininet.bat and when it is ready it will open files.txt
Copy the content of files.txt and paste it here.

Great! Ok here is what I need you to do:

I need you to download the zipped folder from here: [attachment=1736:attachment] Save it to you desktop.

It's a clean copy of wininet.dll (from my own computer, I promise it is not infected! :tazz: )

Reboot into Safe Mode.

Once in Safe Mode, please go here:
C:\WINDOWS\System32

Right-click on wininet.dll and select "rename" and rename it to wininet.old

Then locate the zipped folder on your desktop that you downloaded and
unzip that folder into C:\Windows\System32

After the wininet.dll has been unzipped into the System32 folder, reboot into normal mode and let me know if you had any problems at all.

OK, a few problems:

Mainly, my internet is now not working, so I am using my roomate's computer to post (we use the same connection so it's not the server) - the top of the browser window says "Invalid syntax error"

Second, I got a few alert windows. They were:

(These 3 were from Windows)

1) jusched.exe
The procedure entry point SHRegGetValueW could not be located in the dynamic link library SHLWAP1.dll.

2) ituneshelper.exe
The procedure entry point SHRegGetValueW could not be located in the dynamic link library SHLWAP1.dll.

3) ccApp: ccApp.exe
The procedure entry point SHRegGetValueW could not be located in the dynamic link library SHLWAP1.dll.

(and 1 from Norton)

4) A necessary file could not be loaded:
C:\PROGRA~1\NORTON~1\DEFALERT.DLL

Thanks!

You didn't have any problems unzipping the wininet.dll into the system32 folder correct?

That's strange.

Ok, this is what I need you to do:

Reboot into Safe Mode.

go into C:\WINDOWS\System32

Delete the wininet.dll that you unzipped into the system32 folder. Locate wininet.old and rename it back to wininet.dll

Reboot your computer and see if you have Internet back.
