OK, internet is back up (thanks!) and alert windows did not show up (though Norton keeps warning me about me this problem - so I disabled the auto-protect).

FYI - I had to rename your copy of the wininet file because I was not able to delete it at first (access denied message) and then rename the old file back to a .dll file, then reboot, then delete your wininet file. But it still worked!

So, should I post another HJT log?

Go into C:\Windows\System32 rename wininet.dll to wininet.old (again!)

Locate this file:

C:\WINDOWS\system32\dllcache\wininet.dll

Yes! The Bloodhound warnings should be gone. That was actually a smitfraud file, but the bloodhound warning is the generic warning Norton gives when it finds an infected file and doesn't know what it is. You can delete the wininet.old out of C:\Windows\System32 now

* Please download the Killbox by Option^Explicit.

* Save it to your desktop.

* Run Killbox.exe.

* Select "Delete on Reboot".

* Copy the file names below to the clipboard by highlighting ALL of them then press CTRL + C

Good morning! Re: the DEFALERT file, after we fixed the WININET problem, I stopped getting messages about that file being missing, and Norton seems to be running, so I'm wondering if we even need to replace that file??? but obviously you know best! Ok great! Since the messages stopped then there is no reason to replace the file. The infected wininet.dll must have been messing with it. It wasn't any trouble at all I'm glad Norton is functioning properly.

Delete the following, in bold, if found:

C:\Documents and Settings\user account\Start Menu\Programs\SpySheriff <-whole folder
C:\Documents and Settings\user account\Application Data\Install.dat

*NOTE* user account is not the actual name of that folder. The name of that folder will be the name of your computer profile.

(Let me know whether or not you find those)

Hi -

I found (and deleted) the install.dat file, but not the Spy Sheriff folder.

My computer seems to be doing just fine now. I'm getting a few alert windows from Ewido, but it seems to be cleaning up the things that it finds. Thank you SO, SO much.

Do you have any tips on how to avoid this kind of thing in the future? Or is there a forum about that on geeks to go? Oh, and should I be downloading the Windows Service Pack 2 now?

Yes, you definitely need Service Pack 2! - it will help keep away the things trying to infect your system that Ewido is blocking right now.

Go to http://www.microsoft.com
On the left side click "Windows Update"
Then click "Express Install" to install all the latest security updates including Service Pack 2.

I do have some tips to help prevent this:

Here are some tips, to reduce the potential for spyware infection in the future, I strongly recommend installing the following applications:

Ewido Security Suite <= Protection against Trojans, Worms, Dialers, Hijackers, Spyware, and Keyloggers.

Detect and Remove Programs:

• Installing and using Ad-Aware to remove Spyware <= If you suspect that you have spyware installed on your computer, here are instructions on how to download, install and then use Ad-Aware.
• How to use Spybot to prevent and remove Spyware <= If you suspect that you have spyware installed on your computer, here are instructions on how to download, install and then use Spybot. Similar to Ad-Aware, I strongly recommend both to catch most spyware.

Prevention Programs:

• Spywareblaster <= SpywareBlaster will prevent spyware from being installed.
• Spywareguard <= SpywareGuard offers realtime protection from spyware installation attempts.
• MVPS Hosts file <= The MVPS Hosts file replaces your current HOSTS file with one containing well known ad sites etc. Basically, this prevents your computer from connecting to those sites by redirecting them to 127.0.0.1 which is your local computer

Other necessary Programs:

• Firewall<= A firewall is definitely a must have. Three good free versions are Sygate, Kerio, and ZoneAlarm.

*NOTE* If you choose to use one of these firewalls after downloading Service Pack 2, you will need to turn off the Windows Firewall automatically installed with Service Pack 2. You definitely don't want 2 firewalls running as it will significantly slow your system and will not protect it better.
