Hi, I got an alert from Norton earlier today about having "trojan.alwayup". Since then I have gone to the Norton site and done what they suggest (nothing came up on the scan I did!), used Spybot and Trojan Hunter, as well as Trend Housecall, and I'm currently running SpySubtract....

None of the programs have brought up "trojan.alwayup" and after clicking out of the Norton popup, it popped up again, I clicked out of that, and I haven't been alerted to the problem again.

I've read through various forums where a person has gotten a Norton alert for the same thing, but I'm afraid, at this point, it's all over my head. I'm quite frustrated and any advice would be VERY helpful--I've been at this for almost 12 hours, now....

Should I post a HijackThis log? Or was it some sort of false alarm?

I apologize for the delay getting to your log, the helpers here are very busy. If you are still having malware troubles, I will be glad to help.

We need a closer look at what's going on with your computer. Please download 'HijackThis' from Here .

Unzip HJT to it's own folder such as C:\HijackThis or C:\HJT then double-click HijackThis.exe, and hit "Scan".

When the scan is finished, the "Scan" button will change into a "Save Log" button. Save the log, and copy its contents here. Most of what it lists will be harmless or essential, don't fix anything yet

No problem on the delay, I understand you guys must be busy. Plus, it's a free service, so I don't really have any room to complain ^.^

Here's the hijackthis log that I just took.

mneiai, that doesn't look bad at all. Are you still getting virus warnings? If so, can you give me as much information as possible about them?

You are running SpySweeper and SpySubtract, which are good, but may interfere with any fixes we make in HJT. Please disable them for the time being.

Rescan with HijackThis and place a checkmark next to the following entries:

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [ViewMgr] C:\Program Files\Viewpoint\Viewpoint Manager\ViewMgr.exe

Do you know what this is? I can't find much data on it:

O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [Semagic] C:\Program Files\Semagic\LiveJournal.exe

Now, close all windows including your browser and then click "Fix Checked" in Hijackthis.

Please remove these entries from Add/Remove Programs in the Control Panel(if present):

Viewpoint Manager

Please delete these folders using Windows Explorer(if present):

C:\Program Files\Viewpoint

Reboot and post a new HijackThis log.

Hi, thank you ^.^

Semagic is a program that allows you to post to sites like livejournal without needing to go to the site.

Your log is clean :tazz:. How's it running?

To reduce re-infection potential for malware in the future:

Please read Tony Klein's article: So how did I get infected in the first place?.

It is extremely important to keep Windows and Internet Explorer up-to-date. Please go to http://v5.windowsupd...t.aspx?ln=en-us regularly and install ALL critical updates.

It would be a good idea to install a firewall if you don't have one . Here are a few free ones:
Kerio Personal Firewall
Zone Alarm
Sygate Personal Firewall

I strongly recommend installing three free programs: SpywareBlaster, SpywareGuard, and IE/Spyad.

Use AdAware SE and Spybot S&D regularly to scan your system. Links to excellent tutorials on these programs are in my signature below.

Finally, I suggest downloading and trying Mozilla Firefox browser. Firefox is a free fully functional browser. It's much safer than Internet Explorer.

Everything seems to be running okay...Thanks!

I'm using Firefox right now, actually ^.^

I've been thinking of dling a new firewall...which of the three do you think is best?

Oh, and I know a lot of people dislike NAV...do you think I should switch to a different anti-virus program?

Sygate is getting the most nods amongst free firewalls lately. I use Kerio :tazz:. Not to bash Norton, but I see a lot of viruses in logs that are running Symantec products. Tells me something. I suggest trying AVG Free Edition, it's much better than NAV and free. A link to it is in my signature. Just don't have two AV's running at the same time, they can conflict with each other.
