Hey guys, first time poster, first time builder; Havin' a real crummy time trying to get this thing to display something.

Here's my build:

Case: Corsair Carbide Air 240 (microATX)

Mobo: ASRock H97M-ITX/ac

CPU: Intel i5-4690K

GPU: MSi Twin Frozr V GTX 970

PSU: Corsair CX430

Mem: Corsair VengeanceLP 8GB (2x4GB) DDR3

Storage: Sandisk Ultra II SSD

Here's the deal: I have the thing built and when I power it on, fans spin and the GPU lights up. However, plugging it into the monitor through HDMI grants no response.

I've tried booting up with one stick of RAM -- nothing.

Tried no RAM -- nothing.

Tried swapping RAM -- nothing.

Tried resetting BIOS -- nothing.

Honestly don't know what's wrong. Hoping there isn't a problem with one of my components.

SOS, send help!

Yours,

Matt

:welcome: MattJ12393

We need a little more info on your parts please.

Is this your PSU? > http://www.kitguru.n...upply-review/2/

Is this your GPU? > http://www.msi.com/p...o-specification

Also give the model number for your RAM.

Thanks.

Yup! Those are the ones.

Not sure on the exact model number for the RAM. These are them though: http://www.newegg.co...N82E16820233186

Thanks,

Matt

Thanks for the update.

A possible problem is,

The GPU power connection required,  1 x 8 pin  and 1 x 6 pin and recommends a 500w PSU.

Your PSU only has 1 x 6+2 = 8 pin.   Without the 2nd power connection the GPU will not work, or, if you are using a Molex to PCI-E converter, you may be stressing the 12V rail a little too much, that would cause a shutdown.

Your RAM is 6.25V, the Default for you CPU is 1.5V.   If the UEFI (replaces the older style BIOS) has not detected the RAM correctly, you will need to engage the correct XMP Profile.

To simplify troubleshooting I suggest you do a bare bones test setup as follows.

When working on the computer, always switch off the PSU and take anti static measures by briefly touching a bare unpainted part of the case.

Remove the GPU  and any other add on cards including the wifi module.

Remove the RAM.

Disconnect all cables including the monitor.

Remove the MB and place it on the MB box, close to the side of the case.

Connect the 24v and auxiliary 12v cable to the MB, (two cables) insure the CPU fan is plugged into the CPU fan header on the MB.

Connect a keyboad and mouse.

Connect the monitor, use a VGA or DVI MB integrated video socket, swith it on, you should get a No Signal displayed.

Switch on the PSU,

On the MB front panel header, with a small bladed screwdriver, briefly short out the power on pins.

The PSU and CPU fans should start and keep going.  The LEDS on the keyboard should flash once, If you have a MB speaker fitted, you will hear a beep code, you should get some message displayed on the monitor.

Please post back the results.

UPDATE: Went back to Microcenter and got a new PSU. Corsair CX500M Modular Supply.

Did as you said, took Mobo out of case, unplugged everything that wasn't the CPU and fan, but when I switch on the PSU it doesn't display anything on the screen -- even with VGA instead of onboard HDMI. Instead, my monitor's power indicator blinks. Don't know if that's necessarily good or bad.

Also, the mobo doesn't stay running for more than 30 seconds before restarting itself. Don't know if that's necessarily good or bad either.

Regards,

Matt

If I may chime in while iammykyl is away  :)

When you tried the MBs integrated video port was it with the add on video card physically removed from the MB.

Also, the mobo doesn't stay running for more than 30 seconds before restarting itself.

Sorry to say that this is often caused by a short circuit and where a new build is concerned more often than not the culprit is a bent or missing CPU pin  :(

Thanks for stepping in Phillpower2.

Have to agree, possible damaged MB socket, or defective MB/CPU.

Not the best news Matt.  Good move with the new PSU to eliminate it as the usual main cause of problems.    Next step is to remove the heatsink/fan, then the CPU.   Inspect the MB socket for any bent pins.   If it looks like it is damaged, a well lit photo will help us giving any possible repair instructions.

Ugh, okay. I went and got my computer inspected at a local computer parts shop. He diagnosed my build as either the CPU or MB were the problem, so he suggested I replace both.

SO I DID.

Exchanged both MB and CPU for the same models of both. They still don't work.

I plug my mobo in to the monitor through integrated VGA... but it still won't display. What. The. Heck.

In the process of resetting CMOS. I reaaaalllllllly hope I don't have to give up on this. I've been looking forward to building a PC for LITERALLY years.

Sorry to hear the problem still persists.

I do hope that replacing parts was under the warranty and you were not charged for them.

Was the test done using the bare bones method?

Without the monitor connected, do the PSU and CPU fans start and keep going?

Are you able to test the monitor using a different computer?

Just performed the bare bones method. Without the monitor connected, the PSU and CPU fans still start and stop after 30 second intervals.

The monitor I've been testing with is one that's constantly used by another computer in the house. It works for that one.

Thanks for the update.

With a new MB/CPU and PSU + bare bones setup on the MB box, highly unlikely to be a short.

If after performing the following check, the CPU fan still stops, suggest you take the assembled MB/CPU back to the shop and get them to test it.

First, please watch the video, the CPU is different to yours, but the installation is the same, mostly see the heatsink installation. then,

Hold the top of the CPU fan, to support it, and turn the MB over.   You should see 4 white pins sticking through the MB from the heatsink.   They should be slightly spread apart with a locking barb on each side gripping the the MB.

Please check again you connecytions, as in the image.

Gday Matt.

Did you solve you problem yet?   Was it just a case of a plug not been seated correctly, or another issue.

An update would be appreciated.

Thenks.
