I borrowed my friend's machine last week to transfer family home movies from VCR tapes to DVD. I go to play them in my home DVD player and DVD drive in my different OS PC's and they all say disc error. But they play on my friend's machine fine. Is it a proprietary machine? I'm doing it the way I was shown-I even read the manual. Is there a finalizing step I'm missing like when burning a disc on a PC? I feel like I've wasted the week.

I bought my own XBR716 (used) The DVD drive says no disc. So how hard is it to replace a DVD drive like this? It looks a little different than a PC one. Which I've replaced before.

It looks like it has IDE-like connectors.

I have not found a simlar DVR drive connection for laptops.

 

If the VCR works, save the unit for that and put in a video capture card or get a USB device. I have two and had briefly used a third. Which one to get can be a bit complicated to choose.

Thanks for the link. I will look in to that. The drives I found on ebay are all outside of the U.S. and expensive like you wrote. A video capture card sounds do-able. The funny part of my friend's borrowed machine was I did not finalize the discs. So I borrowed it to finalize the ones I had done before. Then she tells me she didn't buy it new-it's a refurb. I'm waiting for her to tell me which company she bought it from. But as of now there are no more videos to transfer. So it's not really high on the "To Do List". Still would be nice to have thought!
