getting winrar errors crc or unexpected end of archive. problem resolves when using cd recovery disk, but data files need reinstalling. Deleted winrar and used windows xp with sp2 repair does not solve problem any solution ithout losing application and data files??

Ok a rar file, like a zip file is basically a compressed folder. In order to view its contents it needs to be decompressed or "unrar"ed. Programs like winrar and 7zip do this for you. Inside this compressed folder will be any variety of files but in your case pictures. In order to view these pictures they will need to be extracted by 7zip to a folder and then opened.
