dyndns is a good one. I've used it in the past and it will do what you're expecting it to do. I'm not as familiar with noip but they seem to offer the same service. you'd kind of want to read... Go to the full post »

Hello.

I host a Minecraft game server on my residential Verizon network. Verizon doesn't offer static IP's to non-business accounts so i need to set something up so it works the same way as a static IP. The reason why a static IP is important is because my players use it to connect to my server, so if it changes they can no longer connect. I also want players to not use my IP to connect so instead of connecting with "423.2342.423:25565" they connect with "MinecraftAwesomeCoolServer.com" (or .net .no-ip .tk ect). Basically what I'm trying to do is have a static domain name linked to a dynamic IP, not sure if this is possible.

I was reading about my problem in other places and it said these two sites would help.

http://dyn.com/dns/

http://www.noip.com/

I'm not sure if these sites are helpful or not because i am not very experienced with networking so hopefully some of you reading this can give me some answers or at least some more information so i can get a better idea of what I'm trying to do, thanks.

you'd kind of want to read their documentation to get a feel for what they do, but they're fairly basic services. you either configure your router to communicate with your dyndns account or you run a dyndns client on the computer that runs the minecraft server. the router or client then updates the dyndns account with it's current public IP address (the one you get from Verizon) on a predefined schedule. then dyndns makes sure that the dyndns URL that they've assigned to your account always points at the most current Verizon ip address.
