could you be more specific on the error message?
Do a test install, noting everything that occurs and relate that back

The Error messages is as follows:
This application has failed to start because the application configuration is incorrect. Reinstalling the application may fix this problem.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
This problem, also is combined with a white bar in the place of the task bar, no start button, and nothing in the start menu. No icons using explorer. A total mess. This happened after running Cleanup. And I can't system restore.

OK, that is useful. Cleanup is a fairly innocuous program intended to clean up normally safe "junk" but it sounds like you had a malware program sitting in a temporary windows directory and that program still wants to run, or is still at least partially running.

was hoping you had a hijack log posted already, but I am assuming you were going in order?
Since hijack does not require an installation, can you run it and post the results here? My intent is not to clear the infection, but get you up and running again, at which point I will redirect you to the malware forum.

This is a copy of the Hijack this log, which I can't open either. Same error.
When I ran CLEANUP, upon completion, it said that certain files were replaced and told me to insert my Windows XP SP1 CD, but i didn't. Maybe I should have.

Well, yes, you should have. Any particular reason you did not?
Do you have it still?

I figured as much. Thanks for your help. This is an excellent thing you got going here. I think I'll stick around. Oh BTW, is there any way to save the files on the computer? Should I backup?

the repair will not harm your settings or files.
Note: I said REPAIR, not reinstall. A repair will replace damaged or missing files while leaving the system intact
