First of all, you all rock. I "downloaded" nail and a trojan virus and was able to reclaim my laptop following your recommendations on the "start here first" page. I've used Ad-Aware, Spybot, Ewido, nail removal - the whole bit and everything on my system is working perfectly. I want to download Service Pack 2, but I want to make sure I've removed all of the virus stuff before I do that. Can someone take a look at my hijackthis log and let me know if there are other things I should delete prior to installing the service pack? Thanks in advance.

Here's my log:

Hi There mc97219 and welcome to Geekstogo. :tazz:

I am Ukbiker and I will be helping you with your HJT log.

Please carry out these steps. As you will be in safe mode for this, I would advise you to print these instructions out so that you can refer to them easily.

Step 1

Please boot into Safe Mode by carrying out the steps below -

Restart your computer and as soon as it starts booting up again, continuously tap F8. A menu should come up where you will be given the option to enter Safe Mode.

Step 2 (Safe Mode)

Please re run Ewido and have it fix anything it finds, save the log and post it with your next reply.

Step 3 (Safe Mode)

Please re-open HiJackThis and scan. Place a Checkmark in the boxes next to all the entries listed below.

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [exp.exe] C:\WINDOWS\System32\exp.exe
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [776V3nP] insetoledb40.exe
O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [Mwp9RhjET] icftime.exe

Now close all windows other than HiJackThis, then click Fix Checked.

Step 4 (Safe Mode)

Please delete these filesShown in RED using Windows Explorer(if present, they may not be there anymore):

C:\WINDOWS\System32\exp.exe
C:\WINDOWS\System32\insetoledb40.exe
C:\WINDOWS\System32\icftime.exe
C:\WINDOWS\insetoledb40.exe
C:\WINDOWS\icftime.exe

After that, Reboot into Normal Mode.

Step 5 (Normal Mode)

Please re-open HiJackThis and scan, then post your new log and the Ewido log here.

Hi There mc97219.

Congratulations, your log is Clean :tazz: .

If you intend to download and install SP2, which I recommend, then i would advise you to do the following

1. Clear all your temp files

[*]Now you have to clean out your temporary files:
  • Start | Run | type cleanmgr | OK
  • Let it scan your system for files to remove.
  • Make sure Temporary Files, Temporary Internet Files, and Recycle Bin are the only things checked.
  • Click "OK" to remove them.
  • Click "Yes" to confirm the deletion.
[*]Restart your computer normally to return to normal mode.

Set a new restore point in System Restore. You do this through the Control Panel, by first disableing System restore, then Re enabling it. Then create a new (clean) restore point.

Defrag the Hard Drive that you are going to install SP2 on.

When you have done all this and got SP2 installed, post another log for me to check through finally.

UKBiker - the CleanMgr loads about four bars and then hangs. The Task Manager shows that it is still running, but it doesn't load past four bars. Ideas? m.

Hi there

here is another way to get rid of your temp files-

Clear out your Temporary internet files and other temp files.
Go to Start > Settings > Control Panel >Internet Options.
Under the General tab click the Delete temporary internet files,
delete all Offline content as well. Clear out Cookies (note - IF you choose to clear the cookies, you will have to re enter passwords etc the next time you visit a site that needs them as they will all be lost).

Also, go to Start > Find/search > Files or folders > in the named box, type: *.tmp and choose Edit > select all -> File > delete.

Empty/delete the entire contents of the C:\Windows\temp folder and C:\temp folder, if you have one. (Contents but not the folder itself.)

This one too if Win2K or XP.
C:\Documents and Settings\username\Local Settings\Temp\

Empty the Recycle Bin.

Alternatively, you could use the following program
Download and install Cleanup
Run "Cleanup" and when it has finished, Reboot.

Dont forget to purge your system restore files then create a new restore point as your Ewido log shows that the System restore archives are infected.

UK Biker - OK, ran Cleanup, set a new restore point, defraged, and am installing service pack 2 now. Do you want to see the final hijackthis log or ewido log? Or both?

Thanks a ton for your help. :tazz: m.

Hi There

No need to post another log here as the last one was clean. :tazz:

Now that your system is clean, lets keep it that way.

Here are some tips, to reduce the potential for spyware infection in the future, I strongly recommend installing the following applications:

Detect and Remove Programs:
  • How to use Ad-Aware to remove Spyware <= If you suspect that you have spyware installed on your computer, here are instructions on how to download, install and then use Ad-Aware.
  • How to use Spybot to remove Spyware <= If you suspect that you have spyware installed on your computer, here are instructions on how to download, install and then use Spybot. Similar to Ad-Aware, I strongly recommend both to catch most spyware.
Prevention Programs:
  • Spywareblaster <= SpywareBlaster will prevent spyware from being installed.
  • Spywareguard <= SpywareGuard offers realtime protection from spyware installation attempts.
  • IE/Spyad <= IE/Spyad places over 4000 websites and domains in the IE Restricted list which will severely impair attempts to infect your system. It basically prevents any downloads (Cookies etc) from the sites listed, although you will still be able to connect to the sites.
  • MVPS Hosts file <= The MVPS Hosts file replaces your current HOSTS file with one containing well know ad sites etc. Basically, this prevents your coputer from connecting to those sites by redirecting them to 127.0.0.1 which is your local computer
  • Google Toolbar <= Get the free google toolbar to help stop pop up windows.
Other necessary Programs:
  • AntiVirus Program<= An AntiVirus program is a must! Whether it is a free version like AVG or Anti-Vir, or a shareware version like Norton or Kapersky, this is a must have.
  • Firewall<= A firewall is definatley a must have. Two good free versions are Sygate and ZoneLabs.
  • More Secure Browser<= Internet Explorer is not the most secure and best browser. There are safer and better alternatives available. I recommend Firefox, however Opera and SlimBrowsers are good as well.
And also see TonyKlein's good advice So how did I get infected in the first place? and Spyware Aid's spyware article: Spyware, Adware, Malware: What it is, how it got on my computer, how to get rid of it, and how to prevent it.

Glad to have been of help. ;)
