hi i have windows 7  64 bit and havent had an update on this pc for months. everytime i try i get a 80080005 error.  i have followed the microsofts hotfixes but nothing works.  can someone help ? 

Tried to run sfc/scannow and response is "Windows Resource Protection could not start the repair service"

Hi lee1976uk,

That error generally indicates corrupt system files and you are correct to run sfc /scannow.
sfc /scannow must be run with administrator privileges also known as an 'elevated command prompt'

 

If you were not running it with administrator privileges,
Click START, type CMD, right click on cmd.exe, then click RUN AS ADMINISTRATOR
Now run sfc /scannow.

i am using the windows updater in windows 7 dont know the last time it did an update

If it was me, I would turn off Automatic Updating and use Control Panel Recovery to restore to the second restore point back. Make sure you 'Scan for Affected Programs' so you'll know what you need to reload. When the 'lost' updates become available, manually install them one at a time until current and then turn Automatic Updates back on. This will let us know if an update was responsible (that happened to me).
I think the Event Viewer would be useful here but I am not yet familar with that tool.

Looking back at your original post, make sure you have a space in the middle of sfc /scannow.

The Windows update log is located at:

C:\Users\(username)\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Windows\WindowsUpdate.log

yeah had a space,  tried that update readiness tool but didnt resolve the error, no restore points on the pc

From Technet - This should fix sfc /scannow
If you have a file named
c:\windows\winsxs\pending.xml
delete it and then try running sfc /scannow again.
On my computer, the parent folder does not have that file.

tried that had 4 pending files had trouble deleting them but used a program called unlocker and managed to delete them.   still cant run the sfc /scannow though

i got the scannow workig i noticed the trustedinstaller gave 126 error  updated the registry using this :-

Sfc found no violations . Windows update now working it was the trustedinstaller that was the issue
