I recently inherited my step son's laptop.  It was bought because he is a gamer, only it didn't have the punch he needed, so he got a new one, and I got his.  I deleted all the games, ran malware bytes.  I tried turning on defender and got a windows error 577.  I downloaded avast so I would have some security, but how do I fix the defender issue?

This laptop is very slow...  is there anyway to check to see if it is functioning correctly?  It is a Dell P28F inspiron.

thanks in advance -

Joanne

Windows Defender runs very silently (unless there's a detection), no system tray icon or notifications of updates. To view Windows Defender, or run a scan go to the Start screen, type Windows Defender, and the Settings filter.

You cannot uninstall Windows Defender, but if you install another anti-virus program Windows Defender will disable itself.

Go to Settings > Control Panel > System and Security > Action Center and click on the Security dropdown. This will show you an option to turn on Windows Defender if it is turned off

when I followed the article, CCleaner opened, not the action box for windows defender.  The only apps I have downloaded on this pc are windows office, avast, ccleaner, and malwarebytes.  The pc takes forever to do anything.  I'm pretty sure it is clean.  It does appear that items are duplicated on startup.  Is there a way someone can walk me thru how to ensure the laptop is behaving the way it should?

Thanks in advance.

What is the make and full model number of the laptop?

I suggest either restoring it to it's factory new state or doing a Clean Install using a Windows 8.1 downloaded ISO to create a bootable flash drive.

I would not upgrade to Windows 10 from a system that has problems. All that will do is pass the problems on to 10 and make cause the upgrade to fail.

If there is nothing on the computer you want to save then do the restore to factory state then immediately upgrade to Windows 10 using Media Creation Too.

See here: Windows 10 - Upgrade Installation

Ok, I did the factory reset. Stupid q, so sorry, but do I have to do all the updates first, then use the media creation tool? The notes section has me Confused.
