Hello all,

 

Was wondering if someone could offer insight on the below error.  Unfortunately, I don't have much info as it happened suddenly and without warning.  

 

My dad's computer just suddenly stopped booting properly one day.

 

the BIOS loads up and I hear 3 short beeps, 1.....2,3(delay between 1 and 2).  

 

Then just a blank screen and "Reboot or Select proper Boot device or Insert Boot Media in selected Boot device and press a key".

 

I thought that maybe the boot order got mixed up and the computer was somehow starting with something other than the C drive, so I disconnected the DVD drive and then rebooted.  Upon reboot, it then gave me the option of starting Windows or repairing Windows, when starting Windows it would just hang on the load screen, the repair would say that the repair could not be completed.

 

Now after a few days, DVD drive connected or not, it brings me to the initial screen "Reboot or Select proper Boot device or Insert Boot Media in selected Boot device and press a key".

 

Honestly, no idea what can be causing this, my dad noted nothing odd about the computer in the days preceding this.  

 

I feel like the HDD might not be recognized, I checked all the connections and it seems fine.

 

Any suggestions?

Just wanted to add, I connected the HDD to my tower and my computer does not recognize it.

 

The HDD is relatively old, maybe about 10 years, is it possible the HDD mechanically failed?

Most likely this is a dead hard drive.  Does the hard drive "spin up" when first powered?  In your tower, the drive / controller types are proper?  This is not an IDE drive connected to SCSI controller, for example?
