I cant figure this out !

I have a desktop connected via ethernet cord to my router, and several laptops and tablets connected via wireless.

When I stream video on my desktop the video is pixelated, but looks great on my wireless devices.

How can I fix this ?

Thanks in advance =)

Sounds like a duplex error.

With the wired connection in place and after trying to stream something:

Copy the next 3 lines:

netstat -es > \junk.txt

netstat -rn >> \junk.txt

notepad \junk.txt

Start, All Programs, Accessories, right click on Command Prompt and Run as Administrator (XP just double click) , Continue/Yes.  Right click and Paste or Edit then Paste and the copied line should appear.
Hit Enter if notepad does not open.  Copy the text from notepad into a reply.

What version of windows is the Desktop

Ethernet looks good so it's probably not a duplex error but let's make sure.  Control Panel, (View by: Large icons) Network & Sharing Center, Change Adapter Settings.  Local Area Connection (double click).  Configure.  Advanced.  Under Property, slide down until you see Speed & Duplex and select the entry.  In the Value box it should say Auto Negotiate.  If not change it.  OK.

If that's not the problem you might look on the PC maker's website and see if they have a newer driver for the network card but I'm starting to worry that this might be something other than networking.

Let's see what speed you are getting:

Go to http://www.speedtest.net/and click on Begin Test

When the Test finishes click on Share This Result and then select Forum then Copy then move to a reply and Ctrl + v

Let's see what is running on your PC and how busy the CPU is.

Get Process Explorer

http://live.sysinter...com/procexp.exe
Save it to your desktop then run it (Vista or Win7 - right click and Run As Administrator).

View, Select Column, check Verified Signer, OK
Options, Verify Image Signatures

Click twice on the CPU column header  to sort things by CPU usage with the big hitters at the top.

Close all other programs then Wait a full minute then:

File, Save As, Save.  Open the file Procexp.txt on your desktop and copy and paste the text to a reply.

Make a second log, this time start up Process Explorer, start your video and about one minute in save the log.

Let's check the temps and your hard drive and some other stuff:

Get the free version of Speccy:

http://www.filehippo.com/download_speccy (Look in the upper right for the Download
Latest Version button  - Do NOT press the large Start Download button on the upper left!)  Download, Save and Install it.

Close all browsers and open progrms before running Speccy.  Run Speccy.  When it finishes (the little icon in the bottom left will stop moving), File, Save as Text File,  (to your desktop) note the name it gives. OK.  Open the file in notepad and delete the line that gives the serial number of your Operating System.  (It will be near the top about 10 lines down.)  Save the file and close notepad  Attach the file to your next post as it is usually too large for the forum (Click on More Reply Options then Choose file, select the file, Open, Attach this File) Uninstall Speccy.

My internet speed sucks.

I am in a very rural area of Virginia, and have the fastest service that I can get through Verizon.

But it still sucks !

I'm not seeing any problems.  Your temps are excellent.  Your resolution appears to be pretty good.  Your RAID configuration doesn't support SMART so I can't see how the HDs are working but normally that's not a problem with RAID.  Your Process Explorer log looks really good in both cases.  No sign of an infection.  Are you sure that the difference is not just in screen size?  You won't notice a lot of stuff with smaller screens.  Normally a network problem would cause the video to stop and wait for the buffer to refill rather than show errors.  If you pause the video at the beginning that should let the buffer fill.  What video are you having problems with?  Is it one you can give me a link to?  You haven't tried to connect the desktop via wireless have you?  Pixelation is often caused by overly aggressive compression algorithms so it might be normal.  I suppose if you had a bad codec it might cause the problem.  What program are you using to watch the video?

RKinner ...

I apoligize for not being able to get back with you sooner; like I mentioned, I sell tshirts and polos, and summer weekend are just crazy busy.

Thanks so much for your time and help !

Your knowledge and expertise is much greater than the techs at my local PC shop down in Roanoke.

I did in fact try to connect the desktop to wireless and now have 2 "Wireless Connections" - numbered 1 and 2 - that I cant, for some reason, delete.

The issue is not buffering.

I sometimes experience buffering, that even after the buffering stops and the video is playing smoothly, its still pixelated.

I am not sure what program I am using to play the videos - how does one check ?

I have iTune installed and have a huge [750+ GB] library of videos, so I assume its using iTunes to play all video ?

So when you used wireless you did not get the pixelated video?  If that's the case then I would get the latest driver for the wired LAN adapter

Realtek RTL8168D/8111D Family PCI-E Gigabit Ethernet from your PC maker.

If you get it on both, see if they have a new Video/Graphics driver.  Looks like you have DELL P2312H.

If you right click on Computer and select Manage then Device Manager and look in the right pane under Network Adapters you should see your wireless adapters.  (If not View, Show Hidden devices).  Right click on the adapter you want to get rid of and uninstall.  Reboot.

To test your network connection do:

copy the next line:

ping -n 100 -l 1450 8.8.8.8

Start, All Programs, Accessories, right click on Command Prompt and Run as Administrator, Continue.  Right click and Paste or Edit then Paste and the copied line should appear.
Hit Enter

It should look like this:

Pinging 8.8.8.8 with 1450 bytes of data:
Reply from 8.8.8.8: bytes=1450 time=45ms TTL=55
Reply from 8.8.8.8: bytes=1450 time=45ms TTL=55
Reply from 8.8.8.8: bytes=1450 time=43ms TTL=55
Reply from 8.8.8.8: bytes=1450 time=45ms TTL=55
Reply from 8.8.8.8: bytes=1450 time=48ms TTL=55
Reply from 8.8.8.8: bytes=1450 time=47ms TTL=55
Reply from 8.8.8.8: bytes=1450 time=42ms TTL=55
Reply from 8.8.8.8: bytes=1450 time=44ms TTL=55
Reply from 8.8.8.8: bytes=1450 time=42ms TTL=55
Request timed out.

It should do 100 pings then tell you how many worked and how many didn't.  What does it say?

Ping statistics for 8.8.8.8:
    Packets: Sent = 100, Received = 99, Lost = 1 (1% loss),
Approximate round trip times in milli-seconds:
    Minimum = 41ms, Maximum = 51ms, Average = 44ms

It's probably Apple's QuickTime that you are using to play stored videos but you can check. It might be Windows Media Player which is a piece of junk.  Right click on your clock and select Start Task Manager.  Click on the Applications tab.  Close all other programs and then startup a video.  It should tell you what program is running.

I prefer the free VLC for my videos.  http://www.videolan.org/vlc/index.html

It seldom tells me it can't play something because it doesn't have a codec.

What program are you using to download the videos?  Watch them on line?

I'm going on vacation tomorrow (Colorado mountains- trying to get out of the heat) for two weeks.  Will have limited Internet connections and probably little time so expect delays.

Packets sent = 100

Packets received = 100

Lost = 0

Average Round trip = 60 ms

The videos I watch that are always pixelated are online vids.

Again, its weird because my desktop - which has the wired ethernet connection - is the only place where they are pixelated.

If I watch the same video on a laptop [ThinkPad T410 / i5 processor / 4 gb ram] or iPad it plays great.

My desktop is connected to a nice 24" Dell monitor so I'd prefer to use it vs the laptop.

CO sounds pretty nice at this time of year !

I appreciate all your help, and hope you enjoy your vacay.

After you get back I'd love to talk with you about my wifi connection, router, etc etc.

Your Internet is more reliable than mine and I don't see a lot of pixel errors.  Your desktop has the biggest screen so it will be easiest to see pixel errors.  Trying shrinking the viewing area down to what you have on your wireless devices and see if it still looks bad.  A lot of video you see on line has been compressed to make it faster to download.  The compression algorthm often causes pixelation errors on a big screen that aren't apparent on a smaller screen.

There is a neat little program from Nirsoft videocacheview that allows you copy most videos you watch online.  I know it works with Firefox.  http://www.nirsoft.n...cache_view.html

You start it up then start your video.  Once the video starts, you go to videocacheview and click on View then on Refresh.  As soon as you get the first entry you can hit Stop.  You should see the first entry's bytes increasing.  When the bytes stop increasing you have the full video in the buffer so you can right click on it and Copy selected File to.

You can save a video that looks bad and play it in several players and see if one does a better job.
