[Quartz]

My PC came with the MSI-A75MA-G55 motherboard installed.

 

My old SATA hard drive went out so I installed a new Samsung SSD 850 EVO where it once was.  I installed Windows 7 on the SSD.  I have a WD 1.0TB SATA drive that I want to add so I can install all my files on it. 

 

I have no idea how to connect the 2nd hard drive.  Also, need info how to make everything except Windows operating system go to the SATA drive.

Hi,

 

With the PC disconnected from the power simply connect the HDD cables, one to the motherboard into a free sata port and a power cable from the Power Supply to the HDD.

Thank you so much for the video.  I moved the CD/DVD Cable to SATA 3 & am going to plug the SATA hard drive in SATA 2 (where the DVD was).  I have the SSD cable plugged into SATA 1.  Does this sound right?

 

The only problem I think I may have is my power cable is not long enough.  Can I buy an extension cable that fits it and the SATA hard drive?

Yes. With Sata ports the order isn't important unless the ports have maximum different speeds. In your case the board have 6 SATA 6Gb/s ports so all the same speed.

Yes there are SATA power extensions like this:

OK! I got both hard drives connected and they both show up in BIOS but only C drive shows up in My Computer.  How do I put other programs and documents on the SATA hard drive?

Hi,

 

It's better not to edit the posts. Use edit only to add some extra needed info because we don't get notifications about the edits only about new posts.

 

Open the Hard Disk Manager to see how the disk is presented.

 

To Open Disk Manager
- click Start
- on the search box type diskmgmt.msc
- click diskmgmt.msc on the search results to open the Disk Manager
- expand the window to show all drives and blocks then take a picture if you can

- Right click on Disk 1, I think the first option is New Simple Volume choose MBR disk if asked

- Right click on Disk 1 again, and it shoud give you the option to create a New Partition, select type NTFS and Quick Format if you think the disk is ok and have no problems, if the disk is old and can have some problematic sectors uncheck the Quick Format option

Disk 1 is listed as MBR but when I right click these are the options that I can click on:

 

Convert to Dynamic Disk

Convert to GPT Disk

 

OK - Editing post b/c I got it to go to New Simple Volume.  Did not see option for New Partition, but did select NTFS & quick format.  It is now listed as Disk 1 New Volume.  I need to assign a drive letter, right?

Looks Ok. Sorry for not given you more precise instructions, I'm doing this from memory

 

Now I suggest you create a folder called Programs or something like that (keep it simple without spaces) on the new drive so you can direct the program installations to I:\Programs\new_Program make

 

Make sure you always select the Custom Installation so you can change the default folder or the program will go to c:\programfiles\new_Program, even when you do this change there are files and folders that will be created on the C: drive and some programs not very well developed will not work from a different drive!

This is a new problem & I am not sure if I should post it here or move it. I always use a batter backup for my computer.  The battery in the backup went dead & before the new one arrived, the power went off and now my computer won't recognize my Samsung SSD. What can I do?

If you access the BIOS can you see the SSD detected as a drive there?
