Hello Geeks

I am having a problem with my good old machine.

Windows XP Pro SP3

Every once so often my system freezes mainly when I am online. The browser I am using is Firefox recently updated with the latest version. I need to shut down my computer and restart it and then it works again and there is no more brower freeze.

I am not sure where it's coming from and why. Maybe there is some crap that got in the system somehow that freezes my internet connection?

Maybe it comes from the "live box" supplied by my Internet service provider i.e. the thing that's between my computer and the land line. They sent me a new "upgraded" one most recently. There is always the possibility that it might be a recycled piece of equipment that is not working properly?

Also I would like to get rid of all the un-necessary system files that are in my machine.

Thank you very much in advance for any help you can provide. It will be most appreciated.

Howszit Madame?

Are you running Skype?  I have had over 10 clients that run Windows XP SP3 where Skype has updated to version 7.6...(Skype does this without telling you, unless you set automatic updates off).  I have had one client's system completely fail.  If Skype is active, try exiting the program and see if things settle down.

Hope this helps...

Thank you for your answer.

Things would be a lot better if my good old computer was running smoothly.

My Firefox version is 40.0.2

In fact I have never used Skype on this computer.  There is no Skype on it.

Ok..

Windows XP requires that you run your own maintenance tasks, (remove temp files, defragment and run hard drive error checks).  When have you last done these?  I doubt if it is the LiveBox.  Do you have any other devices that connect through the internet through it? Smart phone, iPad?  Nowadays almost everyone has several internet devices and if your other devices are also having trouble that would point to the Livebox.

How old is your system?  hard drive size?  Although XP is still many peoples favorite OP system, computer do age and it might be time to upgrade.  If it is freezing only when you're on the internet, is it happening on the same web page or will any page freeze it?

I'm about to close down for the night.  Hope that this does help.  Sleep well...

Malware often causes freezing and hangs among other undesirable things.

Go to the url="http://forums.whatth...8.html"]Spyware/ Malware / Virus Removal forum[/url], read the info there and follow the posted directions. Once you receive a clean bill of health, come back here if you have any additional questions or concerns or it turns out not to be a malware problem.

Please be patient as that is a very busy area. If you do not receive a response in 3 days, post a message here: What To Do If You Have No Response In 3 Days?

Do not reply to your post there as the malware folks look for posts with no replies first.

I would try Firefox with no addons.
I would also try another browser such as IE or Chrome to see if it computer related or browser related.
