I have a Dell XPS 435T, 940 @ 2.93 GHz, 6 MB, 64 bit running Vista Home Premium Service Pack 2.

Lately it is taking forever to start or restart.

When starting up most of the time it freezes just after the Windows logo in the center of a black background appears. After aprox 5 min a screen appears reading "Your Computer was Unable to Start". Then "Startup Repair" tries to fix the problem. Many times repair is unsuccessful and I'm offered the choice to use a restore point. Luckily this has always worked.

When I'm restarting the machine, most of the times it freezes on the "Logging Off" screen and I have to manually shut it off.

Please advise.

Thanks!

Joe

First thought that came to mind is the hard drive might be failing. :(

Power the system down, wait a few seconds and turn it back on, When the Dell start screen appears, press [F12], select Diagnostics and then run the Custom test against the hard drive.

Sorry to take so long getting back.

When selecting [F-12] at the Dell start screen I found no choices for "Diagnostics" or "Custom Test". The following is what I did find.

I was brought the screen named "Select Boot Device"

Options are;

  • CD/DVD: PO-HL-DT-DT.ST DVD+/-RW GH3
  • HDD: PI-WDC
  • WD750 IAALS-750TBO
  • USB: Seagate FreeAgent
  • Pre-Boot System Assesment (PSA+)
  • Boot to Utility Partition
  • System Setup Menu

Under System Setup Menu I found

  •  Sys Info
  • Std CMOS Features
  • Adv BIOS Features
  • Adv Chipset Features
  • Boot Device Config
  • Power Mgmt Features
  • BIOS Security Features
  • Save & Exit Setup
  • Exit Without Saving

On a side note the computer is now turning off quickly. Still takes about 7 minutes to boot up.

Thanks

Is there any type of 'hard drive diagnostic' on the utility partition?

Just finnished the test. I ran a tests against the entire system. Everything passed.

Strange as it seems, the system is re-starting / re-booting much quicker (4 min as oposed to 20 min before). System also shuts down under 2 min.

It seems it somehow fixed itself???

Keeping fingers crossed this continues :)

Right? I hope it continues as well.

You might also want to go ahead and run the command:

chkdsk c: /r

and then a:

sfc /scannow

to check and see if everything is okay.
