Oki, I have two case fans and neither of them are running. 
The CPU fan and GPU fan are running steady and well.
Is that 56c reading excessively high for a GPU?
Anyway, you're the expert, but it seems like maybe we've gone off on a tangent here? The crashes I'm getting can't be heat related, seeing how it can run a high-intensity program like that Valley Benchmark without issue?

Not at all on both counts, give me a broken computer in front of me and it would most likely take a few moments to diagnose, over the internet it will definitely take longer whether we like it or not I'm afraid

Just so I am clear on this ... you're saying to remove the add-on video card, and then boot the computer up? Thus using the on-board video?

Apologies for my scatter-brain and the subsequent delay. I will get on that ASAP, hopefully after work tonight.

Ok, we have results! I tried to run four games that have previously rebooted the pc.
1) Avernum 4 - Ran fine. This is an old game with early 90s gfx.
2) Endless Space - CTD after a short time of black screen. Caused the taskbar to shrink and move up the screen for a little while. Newer game with pretty good gfx.
3) Etherlords 2 - Brought up a dos style window informing me that Etherlords 2 has closed. Gfx somewhere inbetween the two above.
4) Bastion - Error message telling me that my video card isnt good enough.
No full system reboots anyway. 
I didn't re-start the computer to install drivers when windows asked me, so maybe some of the above would have worked better if I had. Didn't think that would be horribly relevant, but let me know if I need to.

It would have been wise to follow the Windows on screen instructions, in addition to this, did you uninstall the drivers for the HD 6700, if not, create a new restore point, uninstall the HD 6700 drivers, restart the computer, allow Windows to install the appropriate drivers and then test again.

Ok, I uninstalled the Radeon driver, removed the card and rebooted. PC loaded in in very low resolution.
I tried loading the same set of games again.
Avernum 4 - loaded fine.
Etherlords 2 - same result, dos window - Etherlords 2 has closed.
Bastion - loaded up fine.
Endless Space - loaded up fine.
EDIT: After re-installing the video card and driver, I decided to try running one of the offending games, Endless Space, and it loaded up just fine. 
I also tried Avernum and Bastion. Both of those loaded to a screen of intermittent regular lines across the screen. Oddly, I tried to take a screen capture of this, but when I pasted it into Paint, it was an image of the title screen proper.
Endless Space loaded in a window, the other two were fullscreen. I was able to switch E.S. to fullscreen without an issue. It also loads fine now with fullscreen as default.

Where did the drivers you install come from?
If you had post back with an update before refitting the card and installing the drivers I would have suggested you replace the card and then use the AMD driver Auto Detect tool to get the best drivers for your card.
Make sure that you have the latest version of Direct X for your card and OS, see here
Other than the above I`m out of ideas

I got the driver from AMD ... didn't use auto-detect, but filled in the fields myself. WinXP 32-bit, Radeon HD series, series 6000 etc.
Tried installing directX but the installer says I have a newer or equivalent version already.
I deleted an .ini file relating to the game Bastion, to force it to re-detect my native resolution, and it worked.
So it seems that installing fresh video drivers solved the original reboot issue ... and tentatively seems to be working in general.
Let me know if there's anything else you'd like me to check out, otherwise thanks a ton for your assistance!

Good call on your behalf as I would never have thought/suggested that you do so.

Aye the original issue was resolved but shame that certain games started playing up afterwards.
