I am looking for an app that will let me copy a list of names of files in a folder (such as I get by clicking say MyComputer\C:\folder100) and then drop those names into a Word table (where each file name becomes a cell in one of the table’s columns).

 

Can anyone point me to such an app? Or is it even possible to do that using Windows itself?

Yes you can do it using Windows and some steps...

- Open the command prompt on the folder with the files (use the command cd C:\folder100)
- type the command dir /B >list.txt

- load the file list.txt into a new word document, I have an old version with Insert -> File... or open the file and use Copy & Paste

- select all the lines containing the file names (remove list.txt from the list) and then open the Table menu -> Convert -> Text to Table...

- the default options should be ok, simply click Ok and now you should have a table with the data

- use Copy & Paste to copy the data from the table into the final document

And to ask for some explanation of the critical part of that DOS command

                                            dir /B >list.txt

Just what is the significance of the /B?

The dir /B instructs the command to

 

/B          Uses bare format (no heading information or summary).

 

To limit the normal output of the dir command to print only a list of file names.
