I have recently been infected with some spyware that called itself smit fraud

I have followed all guidlines and ran such programs outlined by this site.

Hi James,

Welcome to Geeks to Go !!!!!

Please download these programs -

Smitfraud.exe

CleanUp

Save both the programs to a new folder on your desktop.

Please reboot the PC in Safe Mode (repeatedly tap the F8 key when the PC is starting up).

Run Smitfraud.exe

Run CleanUp.exe and delete all temp files including temprary internet files.

Reboot the PC in Normal Mode and Post a fresh Hijack This log here.

ran both

it got rid of some symptoms, but still have some [bleep] antivirus gold

thank you again for your help in this matter. I am sure it will soon be all solved.

Hi James,

Copy the part in bold below into notepad and save it as AVGoldfix.reg
Set Filetype to All Files and save it somewhere easy to find. We will use it later.
(make sure that REGEDIT4 is the first line of the file)

*Extract the program to your desktop and double-click on its folder, then double-click on Killbox.exe to start the program.
*In the killbox program, select the Delete on Reboot option.
*Copy the file names below to the clipboard by highlighting them and pressing Control-C:

*Return to Killbox, go to the File menu, and choose "Paste from Clipboard".

*If the computer does not reboot by itself, do it manually.

While your computer is restarting, tap the F8 key continually until a menu appears. Use your up arrow key to highlight Safe Mode, then hit enter.

Doubleclick the AVGoldfix.reg we made earlier.
And (still in safe mode) use the DiskCleanup Tool to empty all your Temp folders.

Delete the entire folder C:\Program Files\AntiVirusGold

In the Control Panel click Display > Desktop > Customize desktop > Website > Uncheck "Security Info"

Then boot back to normal, run HijackThis again and post a new log.

for starters i am running 2000 pro and i don't know what i should do for your following instructions

In the Control Panel click Display > Desktop > Customize desktop > Website > Uncheck "Security Info"

I also reconize the www.updatesearches.com as being my hijacked homepage, but it doesn't seem to be hijacked anymore.

Hi James,

Regarding your query - During the fix, u will be asked to fix some entires, delete some files or uninstall some programs. If in case, you do not see those entires / files / programs, please make a note of it. Continue with the fix and in your next post please inform me of all deviations from the fix prescribed.

I am not sure whether you proceeded with the fix or not. Unfortunately, AVGold is still there on your PC. Yes you also have a hijacked homepage. We will fix in the next step. :tazz:

So please carry out these instructions -

Copy the part in bold below into notepad and save it as AVGoldfix.reg
Set Filetype to All Files and save it somewhere easy to find. We will use it later.
(make sure that REGEDIT4 is the first line of the file)

ok

I did previously try to follow these apparently duplicate instructions. I did repeat them paying more attention.

1st I don't have any of the following files

C:\Windows\System32\hookdump.exe
C:\Windows\System32\winnook.exe
C:\Windows\desktop.html
C:\Windows\screen.html

In fact i don't have a c:\windows\ folder. I am running 2000 pro (with 3 users)

I searched for any of these file names and didn't find any.

I had previously deleted the folder: C:\Program Files\AntiVirusGold

I have now found another (AntiVirusGold) folder under another user
which I have deleted

I still have no syptoms, but do see the AntiVirusGold in the HijackThis log

Hi James,

My apologies for messing up the pathnames !!!!!!! You also mentioned that you couldnt find those files on your PC. A lot of malware regenerates itself from a hidden file. It is best to run the entire fix again.

Please ensure that you have administrative rights when running this fix.

Copy the part in bold below into notepad and save it as AVGoldfix.reg
Set Filetype to All Files and save it somewhere easy to find. We will use it later.

Doubleclick the AVGoldfix.reg we made earlier.
And (still in safe mode) use the DiskCleanup Tool to empty all your Temp folders.

Using the Windows Search / Find function, search for AntiVirusGold. Delete all instances of the folders.

Then boot back to normal, run HijackThis again and post a new log.

Sorry for my delay, but I have run the fixes again. I am unable to copy from clipboard in killbox, but copy and pasted each indivdual file name sperately.

Now that my virus definitions have been updated through Norton, I get a virus alert.
the alert is as follows:

c:/winnt/system32/oleadm.dll is infected with trojan.desktophijack.B

and when researching this it says it is the smitfraud virus (malware)

Please continue to help me rid this from my computer as it is annoying.

Download Smitfraud.exe and save it on your desktop.

Reboot the PC in Safe Mode.

Run Smitfraud.exe.

Run Hijack This and click scan. Check the boxes next to following items -

Close all windows other than Hijack This and click Fix checked.

Open Add or Remove Programs (click on Start ---> Settings ---> Control panel. This should be the 3rd item). Uninstall or remove the following items -

ViewPoint Manager

Open Windows Explorer (right click on Start and then click on explore). Locate and delete the following folders and files -

C:\Program Files\AntivirusGold
C:\Program Files\ViewPoint

C:\WINNT\Temp\RecoverFromReboot.exe

Reboot the PC in Normal Mode.

Please visit Panda and do an online scan. Save the scan report.

Run Hijack This and post a fresh HJT log along with Panda scan report.

ok i have done all that. My Norton still warns me the same as before though. It now also warns me of :
