Hi there,

I am really hoping that someone can help me with this.  I have tried searching online for a solution but this situation seems a bit "unique"...

About a week ago my Desktop failed: BSOD, wouldn't reboot even in safe mode.  After about a day of trying, problem was unidentified and unresolved so I resorted to reinstalling Windows 8 from CD.  All good - old files were in Windows.old.  I didn't appreciate that they only stayed there for 28 days otherwise I might have taken more immediate action, but you live and learn.

My problem is that yesterday morning (6 Sept 2015), I booted up my PC and after a bit went off to shower.  When I returned, I found that it was in the process of updating to Windows 8.1 (grrrrrr).  This was irritating enough but this morning I have realised that the Windows.old has seemingly been completely overwritten.  It has a creation date of 6-Sept 2015 and there are no files to retrieve, no documents folder and so on.  Furthermore, I have looked to see if I can restore to a previous version (ie pre-upgrade) and there are no restore points.

At this point in time, I just would like to retrieve my files.  Any ideas or suggestions would be very greatly appreciated.

Hello Maursh :welcome: ,

Here's some free software you can try:

Recuva

TestDisk

Also, How to recover files after reinstalling Windows?

Hi Dashing Star,

Thanks very much for the response.  I downloaded Recuva and was able to recover some files - it didn't seem to find them all though.   will try with TestDisk as well.

Thank you so much for your help!

Thanks for letting me know!

Files that are overwritten several time may not be recovered by Recuva! Try TestDisk and post back!

Despite this, i think it is difficult to recover, do not expect too much.
