After moving from an XP pc to a new W8.1 pc the printer part of my HP Wireless Deskjet 2540 All-in-One still works fine. So too does the Copy feature. But I am having trouble getting the Scanner to work.

Where on the Control Panel are Scanners shown?

Thanks.

Your HP All-in-One should be under Devices and Printers in the Control panel.  If you right click on it you should see some scan options if Win 8 knows how to talk to it..

Rkinner: Thanks.I do see the HP unit there, but without any referenec to scanning. Could it be that the print part works but the scanner does not work with W8.1? Both parts worked under XP.

i'd visit the manufacturers site and download the latest software/drivers for it, and see if it will now work. :- http://support.hp.co...E30AQO5O3KA30R1

this should explain how to troubleshoot and scan in win8/8.1 :- http://support.hp.co...c03478505#N1307

Probably needs a driver.  My Win 7 has two scan entries for my Brother  All-In-One.

Looking on the HP support site they have a new driver program that says it works with Win 8.1

Direct link to the download is here:
