Hello guys I have tried every conscevable action to get rid of Spysheriff and everyone of them failed. I used all of the methods you have listed here and it still reapperas on reboot. I did virus scans, clean ups, Spyware scans (both ad-aware SE and microsoft anti-spyware), uninstalls and the list goe on.. Also I have totally lost control of my task manager and desktop not to mention I am stuck with that annoying "System Stopped" red message splashed against my desktop. So I am at my wits end now. Before i go drastic and reformat my disk I am hoping the gurus here can look at the following Hijackthis log file from my computer and tell me how to fix theis pesky problem. Thanks a million in advance guys.

Hi mespo

Please read through the instructions before you start (you may want to print this out).

Please set your system to show all files; please see here if you're unsure how to do this.

Reboot into Safe Mode: please see here if you are not sure how to do this.

Please go offline, close all browsers and any open Windows, making sure that only HijackThis is open. Scan and when it finishes, put an X in the boxes, only next to these following items:
R3 - Default URLSearchHook is missing
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [RnHdsDpt] C:\WINDOWS\ptwbcguf.exe
O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [Windows installer] C:\winstall.exe
O15 - Trusted Zone: http://ny.contentmatch.net (HKLM)

Click on Fix Checked when finished and exit HijackThis.

If you were unable to find any of the files then please follow these additional instructions:
Download Pocket Killbox and unzip it; save it to your Desktop.
Run killbox and click the radio button that says Delete a file on reboot. For each of the files you could not delete, paste them one at a time into the full path of file to delete box and click the red circle with a white cross in it.
The program will ask you if you want to reboot; say No each time until the last one has been pasted in whereupon you should answer Yes.
C:\WINDOWS\ptwbcguf.exe
C:\winstall.exe

Let the system reboot.

Please run the following free, online virus scans.
http://www.pandasoft...n_principal.htm
http://housecall.tre.../start_corp.asp
Please post the logs From Panda virus scan and HJT.logWe will need them to remove previous infections that have left files on your system.

Thanks again thatman. After following your instructions seemed to have gotten rid of SpySheriff since it does not reinstall itslef at every startup like it did before (at least so far); I have also regained control of my Task manager. However, I still am getting a blue screen (backgrond) as my desktop with a big red bold warning sign saying "SYSTEM STOPPED" followed by "system has been stopped due to a serious malfunction" . Worse is the fact that I have absolutely no control over my Desktop properties. I can get into sdesktop proerties but once there evrything is greyed out and I am unable to get that area to respond.

As per your request here are the logs from Panda Scan and the latest HJT scan. Hope you can be of further help to me.

Let the system reboot.

Please download, install and run this disk cleanup utility called Cleanup version 4.0!: http://downloads.ste...p/CleanUp40.exe
It will get rid of any malware which may be hiding in your temp folders ( a common hiding place). You will also regain a massive amount of disk space. Here is a tutorial which describes its usage: http://www.bleepingc...tutorial93.html
Check the custom settings to your liking under options, but be sure to delete temporary files and temporary internet files for all user profiles. Also, cleanout the prefetch folder and the recycle bin. When the scan has finnished click the close button
When prompted the system will log off to let it clean out the remaining files. when the log screen shows log back on and continue the fix.

Please run the following free, online virus scans.
http://www.pandasoft...n_principal.htm
http://housecall.tre.../start_corp.asp
Please post the logs From Panda virus scan and HJT.log we will need them to remove previous infections that have left files on your system.

Hi thatman. Thanks agin for taking the time out to help me. I used KillBox and followed your instruction and afterwards I used CleanUp as you suggested. Still I have lost my desktop to whatever ailment SpySheriff brought upon my computer (I am assuming even if Spysheriif is gone that messed up desktop is its legacy as it seems a few people have had that problem). My computer works fine and is actually a bit faster after all the cleaning. However I can no longer have whatever background I wish for my desktop. It is stuck on that "Sytem Stopped" warning ad a blue background on my desktop. My desktop properties is still greyed out and unresponsive to anything I do. Any other suggestion? I saw somewhere that one person who had the SpySherrif desktop problem deleted some registry entry that had to do with the desktop, but I have no idea what they did or if it applies in my situation so I will await any other suggestions from you. Thanks in advance

Oh my new HJT log is:

Hi mespo

Please RIGHT-CLICK here and go to Save As (in Internet Explorer it's "Save Target As") in order to download Metallica’s reg file. Save it to your desktop.

Now run Metallica’s reg file

Reboot as normal post a new hjt.log

Hi thatman, thanks but my computer got so bad last week it could not even reboot not even in safe mode! I had no choice but to reformat my entire drive since I was at a lost as what else to do and needed my computer. I had pretty much all my files backed up (as I do habitually) so it was O.K. but as always happens on reformats I ultimatley ended up losing a few files I had not had time to back up. I have my Norton Antivirus back up, running webroot spysweeper (is it the best as is claimed or is there better), router firewall is up, and all p2p programs (Ares, etc) are gone. Hopefully I wont experience that nightmare again.

Thanks for the help though guys, you rock!

Tony Klien: So how did I get infected in the first place

How do you prevent spyware from being installed again? We strongly recommend installing SpywareBlaster (it's free for personal use). Click Here
QUOTE
Prevent the installation of ActiveX-based spyware, adware, browser hijackers, dialers, and other potentially unwanted pests.
Block spyware/tracking cookies in Internet Explorer and Mozilla/Firefox.
Restrict the actions of potentially dangerous sites in Internet Explorer.
Consumes no system resources.

Download, run, check for updates, download updates, select all, protect against checked. All done. Check for updates every couple of weeks. If you have any errors running the program like a missing file see the link at the bottom of the javacool page.

It's also very important to keep your system up to date to avoid unnecessary security risks. Click Here to make sure that you have the latest patches for Windows.

These next two steps are optional, but will provide the greatest protection.
1. Use ANY browser besides Internet Explorer, almost every exploit is crafted to take advantage of an IE weakness. We usually recommend FireFox.
http://www.mozilla.o...oducts/firefox/
2. Install Sun's Java. It's much more secure than Microsoft's Java Virtual Machine .
You can download Sun's newer JVM for Windows at http://java.sun.com/getjava/index.html.
http://www.java.com/...load/manual.jsp Windows (Offline Installation)

After doing all these, your system will be thoroughly protected from future threats.

Have a nice Day.

Thanks a million thatman. I was running microsoft antispyware before and I still got hit so I am a bit of a skeptic toward that program now (they dont portect against cokies so maybe that is a problem). But would you suggest pPybot over spysweeper (since running more than one antispyware only causes conflicts and may leave me more vulnerable). Also i heard Spybot itself is actually a malware is there any truth in that? I see it is always recommended here so I am guessing that may not be true. Or should i use spyware blaster (which I guess is another spyware program) as it seems to have had you highest recommenadtion?

Hi mespo

There are many malware programs using the good name of Spybot search & distroy

The link I have given you is the one and only master himself.
This will work along side spysweeper with no problems.

I use Winpatrol Plus this is a great little program it blocks cookies you dont whant on your system and also has a lot more under the hood.

I also use Spybot search & distroy this is to a great program to use and is free to all user's.

I also use SpywareBlaster this is a great program to it blocks a lot of bad activeX Programs.

Microsoft® Windows AntiSpyware (Beta) this is very good and can only improve it is still a beta program.

My Firewall is sygate pro This is also very very good

My anti-virus program is Panda truprevent titan it Leave's Symantec Shared\Security Center at the starting post. Over the last tyear have only been hit with four trojans but they don't last to long on my system two hours if that.

Nod32 is very good

AVG is very good

If you need any more information just Pm me I will need to close this topic very soon

All the best
