I've tried everything. I've been infected for a week now. Just found this site. I originally had Norton Virus and have tried all the software on this site as suggested but the virus keeps coming back. As suggested, I've run HIJACK THIS AND THE LOG IS BELOW. I really appreciate any help you can give me.

Please print these instructions out or copy and paste them to notepad as the internet may not be accessible through all of these fixes.

The first thing that I need you to do is to go back to TrendMicro’s Website by clicking here and then run another scan. We’re trying to get rid of the SMALL.ABD downloader with this.

Next, clear you temporary files by going to Start | My Computer | *right-click on the hard drive (C:\) and choose Properties | Disk Cleanup. Choose Temporary Internet Files & Temporary Files. Follow the prompts and let it finish.

Now, close all open windows run and HijackThis again, but choose Scan Only.

Put a checkmark next to the following entries:

Make sure that you’ve visually double-checked that you’ve only selected the items listed above and then click Fix Checked ->.

Now, Boot into Safe Mode:
Restart your computer and as soon as it starts booting up again continuously tap F8. A menu should come up where you will be given the option to enter Safe Mode.

Now, let’s remove the offending programs… go to Start | Settings | Control Panel | Add/Remove Programs.

Find the following programs and remove them (if they exist):

Virtual Bouncer
Windows AFA Internet Enhancement
180Solutions
Elite Toolbar


Delete the following files if they exist:

C:\WINDOWS\system32\n.dll

Reboot your computer back to normal mode. Rerun HijackThis and repost the log here.

I attempted to run the program from trendmicro but it gave me the following message:
The system file is not suitable for running MS-DOS & Microsoft Windows APplications. So I cannot run the Trendmicro program scan.

I was using mozilla and have gone to microsoft Windows Explorer. It did attempt to scan but now is saying Trend Activeupdate did not update successfully. It may result forom busy server or bad network traffic. Error code 28. Error string: genera source network failure. Do You want to rettry? I did but keep getting the same error. SO I'm stuck at this step it looks like.

That's fine. You have Norton your system, and that should work. Go ahead and make sure your virus definitions are up to date and replace the online scan with a full Norton scan and work from there.

Make sure that you’ve visually double-checked that you’ve only selected the items listed above and then click Fix Checked ->.

Now, Boot into Safe Mode:
Restart your computer and as soon as it starts booting up again continuously tap F8. A menu should come up where you will be given the option to enter Safe Mode.

Now, let’s remove the offending programs… go to Start | Settings | Control Panel | Add/Remove Programs.

Find the following programs and remove them (if they exist):

ViewPoint (or ViewPoint Toolbar)
SurfSideKick


Delete the following files if they exist:

C:\Program Files\Viewpoint\ <<~~~ Whole folder
C:\Program Files\SurfSideKick\ <<~~~ Whole folder
C:\WINDOWS\cfgmgr52.dll


Reboot your computer back to normal mode. Rerun HijackThis and repost the log here. Also, tell me how your computer is running now. Are you still getting messages and whatnot?

in the course of removing the viewpoint toolbar and program I see that the WINDOWS AFA INTERNET ENHANCEMENT shows up there too. I tried to remove it but it does nothing when I try. Just letting you know if that is a problem. I'm using a different computer to communicate to you on this website so I haven't rebooted yet.

The answer is NO, leave cfgmgr52.ini be for now.

Yeah, we'll need to get rid of AFA too.

First, download Cleanup! Run the install program, but don't do anything else with it quite yet.

In order to remove this infection we will need to use HijackThis to manually remove the infection:1) Print out these instructions as we will need to shutdown every window that is open later in the fix..

2) Reboot your computer into Safe Mode

3) Enter the Windows Control Panel and double-click on Add/Remove Programs.

4) When the installed programs list appears, double-click on the entry for Windows AFA Internet Enhancement if it exists and allow it to uninstall. Then exit the Add/Remove Programs screen and the Control Panel. (if it doesn't allow you to uninstall it, just skip this part and continue on)

5) Close all open windows.

6) When the program starts, click on the Scan button.

7) Put a checkmark next to the following entry:

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [C:\WINDOWS\VCMnet11.exe] C:\WINDOWS\VCMnet11.exe

Then click the Fix button

8) Exit HijackThis.

9) Delete the following files if they exist:

C:\WINDOWS\VCMnet11.exe

10) Reboot your computer back to normal mode.
Run CleanUp! and click CleanUp!. Let this run through, it could take some time.

Lastly, we need to reset your restore points:

To reset your restore points, please note that you will need to log into your computer with an account which has full administrator access. You will know if the account has administrator access because you will be able to see the System Restore tab. If the tab is missing, you are logged in under a limited account.

1. Turn off System Restore.
On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
Check Turn off System Restore.
Click Apply, and then click OK.

2. Reboot.

3. Turn ON System Restore.
On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
UN-Check *Turn off System Restore*.

WOW. I hope you got it. I haven't had any warnings from any of the virus software the last few times. Everything does seems to be working well. By the way. The WINDOWS AFA Internet Enhancement still shows up in add or remove programs but doesn't allow a removal. Just flashes if you try to remove it. I assume that means it isn't there - /?? Ihope.

Now run CWShredder. Click I Agree, then Fix and then Next, let it fix everything it asks about.

Using windows explorer, please delete the following item:

C:\WINDOWS\system32\PSof1.exe

Reboot your computer into normal windows.

I know you had trouble doing this before, but I'd really like you to try running another Panda ActiveScan. If it lets you do it, great, if not... that's fine too.

Run me another log and let's see what we have left.

Oh, as for your question. I don't see any trace of WINDOWS AFA Internet Enhancement left in your log, so we should be okay there.

I was able to run the Panda program. It found 17 infected files and says it fixed them. I save a log file from it and can post it if you wish. Meanwhile I did the other things and here is the Hijack log:
