I am still trying to get this computer my mother gave me up and running. Slower than molasses in January. Took 4 min to load geeks.  I have already done the cleaning and malware removal route and that hasn't worked to speed this up. I talked to my ISP provider who sent me to a speed test site to find out if there were problems. It came up with 19 OSP severe issues, 19 browser severe issues and 511 pc performance critical issues. I have tried saving the information that it states is an issue, but unless I pay for the whole program then al they can do is tell me the issues. I would love to update this computer to use Windows 7, and have all the necessary requirements EXCEPT the video card and when I emailed Acer about it they informed me that they do not carry updated drivers for OSP that were not insalled at time of purchase.

Right now it's taking so long to load even just Mozzilla or Chrome there's no point in me trying to do anything on the web.

Right now here are my specs maybe someone out there can help, I did notice that most of the issues were registry issues but I'm not that great when it comes to poking around the registry.

Specs:

Acer 5100-4800

2.2 Gig

2 gig ram

windows xp sp 3

Please let me know what other information you required .

I am wondering if it would be easier to find the factory reset and start from scratch, since most of the errors are programs my mother loaded and she had no idea on what she was doing.

Have you got rid of all the non needed start up programs? and any programs and bloat ware that's not needed?

It's a pretty old rig so it's never going to be fast. It may be a good idea like you have mentioned to install a fresh clean copy of your Operating system.

gotten rid on most of the start up programs that I"m aware of. There are quite a few though that I'm unsure of. She's had so much stuff running on this computer that it's getting hard for me to figure out what to delete. It's more the registry errors and page sys that may need to be looked at

I know this computer will never technically be fast....I'm just trying to find a way to get rid of the excess crap that's on here, and maybe not have to wait up to 8 minutes for a website to load..or wait while i'm typing for the thing to catch up to what I've typed

You could try a system restore to the oldest point and see if that helps.

If I was in your position and had the os disk I'd be tempted to do a clean install it's the easiest and quickest way in my opinion to sort it out.

Make sure to save anything you want to keep before doing it if you choose to.

yea I was thinking the same thing. Unfortunately my mother bought the machine through staples with a preloaded OS and they never gave her the original CD. But thank you I didn't even think of doing a restore to oldest date. I think I'll same my info and try that

and thanks
