I just want to make sure the resolution is set properly on each monitor.  How do I do this?  (Please make it easy on me as I don't know diddly about using the Terminal -- I can copy and paste commands, and that's about it).

 

(I use the monitor on my laptop, along with an external monitor which is located above it).

what hardware is in your laptop, for example does it use amd/ati, nvidia or intel for it's graphics? if nvidia or amd/ati do you use the proprietary drivers of just the open source drivers?

 

depending on those things what software you use to control the display settings may be different, for example you may use ati's catalyst control centre or nvidia's x server settings program or just ubunu's settings and display options.

Ummm... this is my laptop and all I did was install Ubuntu.  I didn't do anything custom with the drivers.

ok so it uses intel graphics so you don't need to install any other graphics drivers and you'd just use ubuntu's system settings to change resolutions.
