Hi, thanks for that.  Since the fan works I'll give that a go, will have to be tomorrow though cause I'll need to borrow a small screwdriver from my Dad :D

Hi Phillpower 2 I know its late but a quick update.  I did as you suggested and since then the lappy has been running fine for 5 hours now without cutting out.  It downloaded over a hundred updates and it seems a lot better.  I daren't say its cured though, don't want to jinx myself :D  Thanks once again for your invaluable help.
