I continue to need help learning to use W8.1. Would appreciate help on SEARCHING.

 

1. I have forgotten the names of several files that I created using OpenOfficeWrite that I saved them on my W8.1 pc.

With XP I could use its search facility to look for *.odt and it would display all the files with that extension and show me the full path of each file.

How can I do the same thing with W8.1?

 

2. With XP I could locate a file by searching for a word or phrase that it contained. How can I do the same thing with W8.1?

Is File Explorer already on my PC; I assumed it was but the document you cited seems to suggest I have to load it. Could that be right? Or am I confused here? ... batpark

Yes! That reference doc was a great help.

 

I now know how to search for a document containing the word, for example, australia. And how to see the full path for that document. Great.

 

But I find that when the target word (australia) is in a file stored on my external drive (D:\) then the Search does not work. Is there something else I need to do to search within the D:\ drive?  .... batpark

Based on the pointers you gave me I <thought> I had learned how to search for a file on my external hard drive (D:\). But I was premature. Can someone see what I am doing wrong here?

 

I created a document containing the words "Strategic Services" and saved it (as an odt file) in a folder (AKSdocs) on my external hard drive (D:\).

 

I then tried to find a file on the D:\ drive containing the words strategic services -- following (I thought) the instructions of the document you sent me.

• I first went to File Explorer and double clicked the D:\ drive.
• I then inserted 'strategic services' into the search box of the resulting screen.

I saw searching action (in the progress bar) but then received the message that "no files found for your search."

 

What am I doing wrong?

I'm not sure what's wrong nor do I fully understand the file search as in Windows 8.1, but I'll conduct an investigation for you.
