Last night I visited a page that actually never opened. Instead I got a pop up saying that a virus was detected and that I should run AVG to remove it. At the same time the following things happened:
- Windows Explorer kept asking permission ( I use Zone Alarm as a firewall) to connect to the internet.
- Internet exlporer opens by itself to a blank page (I work with Firefox and never use IE)
- My screensaver got replaced by a black screensaver with a clickable message in the center saying ''You're in danger! Remove all spyware from your computer now...etc.''
- Among the other programs on the taskbar there is now a yellow triangle with an exclamation mark that every now and then produces a pop up saying that I need spyware since none is detected on my system.
I already ran Adware(updated), CWShredder(latest version) and AVG (3 months ago last updated) but they can't find anything and the problem persists. I installed McAfee and when I restart it informs me that there is a malicious script detected. On top of it all I cannot seem to be able to get updates for either AVG or McAfee.
I'm desperate and I need your guidance and help! Thank you in advance.

I just finished from doing a few extra things and some research to see what this thing is. I also produced a Hijack log file which I'm attaching in this message.
By the way, I downloaded & ran Clean Up, Ad Aware SE, CWS Shredder, Spybot S&D, and TDS3. Nothing found. I also downloaded another spyware cleaner which did find some things but the free version only provides a scan and does not remove anything. What it found is the following 2 trojans:

Troj/Spyre-A
Category: adware & registry value
Type: adware
Threat: Moderate
Description: A trojan that changes the wallpaper to an advertisement of the author's choice.
Location: C:\WINDOWS\System32\spoolsrv32.exe
C:\WINDOWS\System32\txfdb32.dll
Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\RunOnce\Srv32 spool service

Trojan/CWS Combo
Category: registry value
Type:trojan
Threat: HIGH!
Description: A combination of unclassified system attackers
Location: Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main\Toolbars_Placement

If it helps at all, the text on the wallpaper that is clickable points to some site "http://www.topantisp...erview.php?149" which must be a fake infected page.

Finally, I'm attaching the log file generated by hijack this and look forward to getting help ! Thank you again for your time.

Hello,

Please Update your AVG because you're running an older version. :tazz:
Uninstall AVG6 and install AVG7

* Start HijackThis, close all open windows leaving only HijackThis running. Place a check against each of the following:

R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Bar = http://red.clientapp.../search/ie.html
R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Default_Page_URL = http://red.clientapp...//www.yahoo.com
R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Default_Search_URL = http://red.clientapp...//www.yahoo.com
R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Bar = http://red.clientapp...rch/search.html
R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\SearchURL,(Default) = http://red.clientapp...//www.yahoo.com
O3 - Toolbar: (no name) - {ACB1E670-3217-45C4-A021-6B829A8A27CB} - (no file)

O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [Update Service] C:\PROGRA~1\COMMON~1\TEKNUM~1\update.exe /startup
O4 - HKCU\..\RunOnce: [Srv32 spool service] C:\WINDOWS\System32\spoolsrv32.exe

O16 - DPF: {F72BC3F0-6C20-4793-9DDA-258589D8A907} - http://akamai.downlo...slv32_EN_XP.cab

* Click on Fix Checked when finished and exit HijackThis.

* Using Windows Explorer, locate the following files and delete them if still present:

C:\WINDOWS\System32\spoolsrv32.exe
C:\WINDOWS\Web\desktop.html
c:\WINDOWS\system32\srvc32.exe
c:\WINDOWS\system32\spoolsrv32.exe
c:\WINDOWS\system32\txfdb32.dll
c:\WINDOWS\system32\srpcsrv32.dll

Go to start > control panel > Display properties > Desktop > Customize Desktop... > Web tab > uncheck and delete everything you find in there. (except for "My current home page")

* Reboot your system and post back a new hijackthislog.

Dear Miekiemoes thank you very very very much for your reply!!!! ;) :tazz: ;) I did as you said and I think it's gone :tazz: ;) The wallpaper is back to normal and the yellow triangle on the icon tray is gone. At the time of writing this, windows explorer and internet explorer have stopped making requests to connect to the internet so I guess everything is back to normal. Let me know if anything more AND what needs to be done. Here's the new Hjt log file:

One last question. Yesterday and before your reply I downloaded the latest AVG version and ran it. It came up with some trojan dialer and showed me the location it was found but couldn't heal it. I went to the location and deleted it manually and now I have two system file icons on my desktop named 'Thumbs' and 'Desktop'. By being impatient I may have wrongly deleted something that I shouldn't. What am I do with those icons? Can I safely delete them or should I move them somewhere?

Again, THANK YOU for your precious HELP and your TIME !!!!!!!!!

Hi,

You may fix next in hijackthis again:

R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\SearchURL,(Default) = http://red.clientapp...//www.yahoo.com

The rest looks clean. :tazz:
Don't worry about the 'Thumbs' and 'Desktop', they are normally always there, but hidden. You probably made your hidden files and folders visible.
So, to fix this,

Click Start.
Open My Computer.
Select the Tools menu and click Folder Options.
Select the View Tab. Under the Hidden files and folders heading, uncheck Show hidden files and folders.
check: Hide file extensions for known file types
check the Hide protected operating system files (recommended) option.
Click Yes to confirm.
Click OK.

To keep this clean in the future, I would suggest the following things:

Most important thing here --- Visit asap http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com to download and install all the updates and security patches!!

Install Spywareblaster
SpywareBlaster doesn`t scan and clean for so-called spyware, but prevents it from being installed in the first place. It blocks the popular spyware ActiveX controls, and also prevents the installation of any of them via a webpage.

Avoid illegal sites, because that's where most malware is present.

Let your antispywarescanner(s) scan frequently and don't forget to update before.

And I do suggest you perform an online virusscan once in a while. (Kaspersky online and/or Bitdefender). Because what one virusscanner can't find another one maybe can.
Also make sure that your virusscanner, the one that is installed on your system is always up to date!

Make sure your windows has the latest updates: http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com/

More info on how to prevent malware you can also find here (By Tony Klein)

Happy surfing again! ;)
