Hi Everyone,

just bought a new pc and getting rid of old one.

I created 3 recovery disks on DVD-RW using the Acer Erecovery utility within the Windows Vista of my old pc.

I then used dban (Darik's Nuke and Reboot) to securely remove all data from both hard drives. This was successful.

I then rebooted the pc using the first recovery disk in an attempt to restore Windows Vista to its factory settings.

It seems to work but then gets stuck on this message in the top left. I left it for a couple of hours to see if it would pass but to no avail.

"ed checksum"

Any help would be much appreciated.

:welcome:   dreadpiratedazza,

checksum errors are commonly associated with an incorrect boot configuration/BIOS setting and nothing to do with Windows itself.

Have you gone into the BIOS and checked that the time and date are current.

If you have checked the BIOS settings, what is the present boot order.

Is the HDD detected in the BIOS, a Seagate HDD will begin with the letters ST and a Western Digital HDD will begin with WD, other brands vary and please note that any mention of a HDD in the BOOT sequence that is not labelled with such letters is only the boot order and not the BIOS detecting the presence of a HDD.

Hello dreadpiratedazza,

If you hit the post answer by mistake you can use the edit tab bottom right of the dialogue input box to add the answers to my questions in my reply #2.

Hi again, hit the wrong key! Thanks for getting back to me. The date and time are correct. The boot order is hard disk, dvd and then nvidia. It doesn't specifically mention the seagate drive in there. However, if you boot without anything in the dvd drive you get: Pxe-e61: Media test failure, pxe-mof: Exiting nvidia boot agent, disk boot failure, insert system disk and press enter. Just been looking through cmos and advanced bios settings. Under hard disk boot priority I found 'SCSI'. Is that recognition of the seagate drive?

Thought so but no problem  :thumbsup:

The boot order is hard disk, dvd and then nvidia

As per my reply #2 any mention of a HDD in the boot sequence that is not labelled with such letters is only the boot order and not the BIOS detecting the presence of a HDD.

if you boot without anything in the dvd drive you get: Pxe-e61

If for some reason a hard drive is not detected the computer will attempt to boot from the network controller if it is on the list of boot devices, you will only get such an error if the HDD is bad or not detected due to a bad connection etc.

Just been looking through cmos and advanced bios settings

Did you see a restore default settings or most stable option.

Under hard disk boot priority I found 'SCSI'. Is that recognition of the seagate drive?

Unfortunately no, SCSI = Small Computer System Interface.

What happens if you press the Alt and the F10 keys down together.

There are ways of checking the HDD but you will need access to another computer that has internet + a burner or spare USB thumb drive.

That was quick. Thanks. Ok, so, to recap: it's clear then that it doesn't recognise the hard disk. Looking at BIOS now, there is a 'load default settings option. Nothing happens with alt+f10 whilst in BIOS. In all of the submenus within the BIOS there is a 'optimized defaults' option on top of the 'load default settings in the main menu. I do have access to another computer but I'm on my phone at the moment. So what's my next move?

Looking at BIOS now, there is a 'load default settings option.

Select that option, save the settings and then exit the BIOS and then try the disk/s that you created again please.

Nothing happens with alt+f10 whilst in BIOS.

Sorry I should have said to try pressing these two keys down together after restarting the computer and as soon as you see the Acer splash screen, this to see if it produced any type of on screen error message.

In all of the submenus within the BIOS there is a 'optimized defaults'

This option should not be selected as it is a form of overclocking and can make the computer unstable.

I do have access to another computer but I'm on my phone at the moment. So what's my next move?

Restoring the default settings, trying the disks that you created again and trying the Alt + F10 key suggestion.

Thanks for that. I tried what you said. Even tried alt+f10 during boot up but nothing happened; tried it twice. Also went back into BIOS to see if it recognised the hard disk at all; no joy there. Tried the boot up with the recovery disk I had created but still ended up with

ed checksum.

However, there was one difference. The error messages concerning "Pxe-e61: Media test failure, pxe-mof: Exiting nvidia boot agent, disk boot failure, insert system disk and press enter" have disappeared.

This is what I get now on the screen just before ed checksum>

"AMD data change . . . update new data to DMI!

Boot from AHCI CD-ROM : (I got these two lines before)

1. NO EMULATION System Type- 00"

At least something has changed!?

I feel that it would be best if we started from scratch now that you have restored the system defaults, a little repetition I`m afraid;

Can you post the exact model name or number of the Acer Aspire computer so we can do some research, for example, we need to know if it has IDE or SATA ports.

Please check the contents of the recovery disks that you created on another computer, this only involves popping the disks into the drive tray and then manually exploring the contents, this to check if the recovery disk/s themselves are good.

Access the BIOS and change the boot order to DVD/CD drive first and the HDD second, save and exit.

Try your first recovery disk in the DVD drive, keep a check on the activity LED on both the DVD drive and the HDD, this to see if your recovery disk is being read and if the computer is attempting to send data to the HDD.

From your OP;

I then used dban (Darik's Nuke and Reboot) to securely remove all data from both hard drives.

Just to clarify, are there two physical HDDs present or is there only one that previously had two partitions on it giving you two drive letters, C: and E: for example.

Just looked at the recovery disks on another pc and no error messages come up. Took a screen shot of all three, but I'm struggling to load it up here. Folder structure of all 3 disks looks fine to me.

Oh, and on boot up now(without recovery disk) the PXE error messages come up.

Just changed boot sequence to DVD/CD first and HDD second. Saved and exited.

Rebooted twice on the recovery disk but each time got  "ed checksum"

Also, there is no activity light on the DVD drive. However, there is a little blue light on the side in the shape of a battery that does flash on and off intermittently at boot up but not when reading the DVD.

Suggests a bad drive or disk burn as there is no attempt to read the disk.

If you have a spare USB thumb drive you can try Puppy Linux, this will at least allow you to quickly check out the HDDs;

There are instructions on how to boot from flash drive with puppy here; http://www.pendrivel...e-from-windows/
