Hi all

everything OK until the weekend when after what appeared to be a less than satisfactory Windows update I can not use System Restore to go back to last week (main problem signature  6.1.7600.16385). I started the process because I was not hearing sound despite all drivers etc being in place and working properly. I also can not get the wireless card to communicate with the router now (although I still have access with the wired desktop). I ran a CHKDSK /r overnight but have not had the chance yet to check the outcome of this (in fact the machine rebooted so would also appreciate here knowing how to look up the outcome of the CHKDSK). I am naturally wondering if it is either a system corrupt or a virus (my suspicions were aroused here when a malwarebytes AV scan kept stopping after a few seconds in safe mode). Obviously there is a recommended list of workarounds for this but I would appreciate what the current line of thinking on this was? speccy profile below followed by minitoolbox output

The sound issue must be put aside for the moment as you have bigger issues going on.

 

It is entirely possible that you have malware on your computer but only the experts on the removal forums can help you with that, if there is any hint that the computer is infected I will provide the GTG malware redirection information for you.

thanks ever so much for the kind reply! can certainly remove the likes of µTorrent (think I only looked at it once upon someone else's recommendation 4-5 years ago and never used since). The only AV and firewall currently "resident" and active are avast and Outpost, respectively, so I can certainly remove all traces of the rest. Do I have to repost in the removal forums or would they be monitoring this one (guess not)? thanks again

For now at least I suggest that you only keep Avast and use Windows own Firewall as that is all that you need.

 

No need to consider posting on malware atm, freeing up some space on the HDD and getting Windows fully updated are your priority, this will most likely resolve most if not all of the present problems that you are having, see my canned text below;

 

Please note that in order to avoid data corruption and/or mechanical HDD failure for data only HDDs you must always have a minimum of 10% of the HDDs overall storage capacity available as free space and between and 15 and 20% of a HDDs overall storage capacity available as free space if the OS is on it, the free space allows for information to be copied to and from the drive efficiently.

Not having the above can render a computer inoperable if the HDD concerned has the OS on it due to the MBR (Master Boot Record) becoming damaged/corrupt, please see information @ http://pcsupport.abo...sterbootrec.htm

 

 

Uninstall any old software, games, pictures, videos, music etc off the C: drive and preferably until you have 100 to 110GB of free space on the boot drive.

Please note that drivers should never be updated unless it is to address a known issue, if a driver is installed needlessly you can end up creating the very issue that the updated driver was intended to correct, rolling back to the previous driver does not always work and waiting for the next driver update can take some time and also not work.

Ironically, after ruthlessly restricting what was being loaded I was able to roll back to the previous Windows version that had proved impossible previously.
